Work in Russian companies abroad. Working abroad: advice from Russian emigrants. Feedback about working in Israel
Where exactly Russians work abroad depends on the person’s education and skills. Whatever job you agree to, you will work there - just like whoever you agree to marry, you will live with. Isn't it simple?
There is no discrimination based on nationality when hiring - accent is not a problem. (Although, if you really want, it can be removed with the help of a speech therapist or, in our opinion, a speech therapist.) They look at whether you are able to perform the necessary tasks, general culture, politeness, reliability, and, of course, hard work.
In the public sector, where pay is lower than in the private sector, specialists from India, China, Korea, Africa, and Asian countries are employed - it is important that the person wants and is ready to work. In the private sector, people choose which doctor to go to - perhaps not everyone will want to go to a Russian specialist.
But in the public sector with free medical care You don’t choose a doctor, so here the crusts determine your position. There are a lot of immigrant doctors in hospitals and clinics, as well as nurses, whose incomes are also high here.
One of my friends went to study to become a nurse and has the best results in the group, including local female students. However, she still speaks English with errors and a strong accent. This does not prevent her from getting excellent grades. She came to practice at the hospital and was asked to stay and work there, they liked her so much - they didn’t even have to look for a vacancy. She's over 40.
Nurses in Australia earn 50-100 thousand “green” per year.
Another friend, who is 38, decided to study to become a midwife, which will take her 2-3 years. After that, she will also receive approximately 70-120 thousand dollars a year.
Why is it so easy to study any profession, regardless of age? More on this later.
The most important thing when looking for a job is to speak the language of the country in which you are going to live. You can learn a profession that is in demand at any age.
Advantage of higher education
Any higher education diploma will help if you are ready to work in government agencies. To get there, you can take free retraining courses offered by the government. They take everyone there.
For having even a Russian (Ukrainian) diploma, you will be given additional points in assessing the qualifications of a civil servant, which will affect the rank that determines the salary level.
Apart from a medical degree, the best higher education qualifications are engineering ones. Humanitarian professions are not in such demand, but having some qualifications will help here too. This shows that you are able to work hard - because without this you will not get a higher education diploma. It's appreciated here.
If you can’t find a job due to poor language skills, sign up for English courses. These courses are free for wives of citizens. At the same time, you can work in the field of low-skilled labor.
For example, cleaning (cleaning premises) or tailoring custom-made dresses (custom-made wedding dresses cost crazy amounts of money, if you know how to sew, you won’t be lost), babysitting, dog walking. People with poor knowledge of the language are hired to work as waiters in restaurants.
For example, I usually hire a cleaner for 2-3 hours a week because I don’t like doing it myself. Finding a good cleaner is not so easy. Good employees are valued. Place an ad in the local newspaper (it costs about $20-25) and you will immediately have several clients.
If you don't have the money to advertise in the newspaper, put flyers offering services in your area in mailboxes (my daughter found several dog walking clients this way). If you are a polite and responsible worker, your circle of clients will grow.
There is also a site called airtasker.com, where people search for and offer services of all types - from cleaning and dog walking to furniture assembly. If you don’t sit idle, then finding employment and income is not difficult.
House cleaning also pays well. If your clients are happy, you will quickly build up your base and begin to earn good money.
Getting an education
If you are a citizen of the country, the state will provide a loan for education and you can get any profession (courses for certified professionals take 3-4 months) or higher education and a bachelor's degree (2-3 years). To obtain citizenship you must live in the country for 5 years.
The loan is given for studying at any accredited educational institution.
Student loan repayment begins only when you earn more than $47,000 a year. If you never start earning that much, then you won’t need to pay anything.
There is also a system of “apprenticeship”, where they learn a profession for free and receive a small hourly wage ($10-11 per hour).
There is also a state system vocational education TAFE, where you can learn anything from programming to hat making. Tuition there is very cheap (1000-1500 dollars per year). Courses range from several weeks to 2 years, upon completion a diploma or certificate is given.
Education can be obtained at any age - there are no restrictions.
- The husband of one of my friends graduated from university as a lawyer in absentia at the age of 46 and now makes excellent money, constantly expanding his clientele.
- My husband's ex-wife is now studying to become a psychologist. Why not? She is a jeweler by profession, but she is tired of this industry. I decided to learn a new specialty and conditions have been created for this at any age.
- One of my friends at one time worked part-time, finding people who wanted to study at a university, but they did not have money. Yes, that's right, I found it those who want to study for free and made money from it! Since the government gives the loan, private educational establishments are happy to find students for pre-approved (needed in given time) specialist courses. For 1 student, my friend received 2-3 thousand “greens” as soon as he completed the first few weeks of training. She was sitting in shopping centers, inviting promising students and distributing leaflets. 3-4 people a month and she herself has an excellent income!
Salary
The minimum wage for part-time workers is $16 per hour, and for full-time workers is $22 per hour. That is, you simply cannot pay less than this.
- Lawyers and lawyers earn $250-$1000 per hour from clients.
- Doctors charge $80-$350 per hour for a consultation. A 15-minute visit to a primary care physician will cost approximately $30-$65. The local doctor, who is free for you, receives $32 from the state for a 15-minute consultation. There are private general practitioners who charge much more, then you pay the difference.
- Psychologists: 130-180/hour.
- Personal trainer: 50-100/hour.
- Electricians and plumbers: 60-100/hour.
- A cleaning lady costs me $25 an hour (usually $20-40).
- The average salary in Australia for those working in a non-permanent position is $60 thousand per year.
- For those who have a permanent job - 74 thousand dollars a year.
My 22-year-old stepdaughter, who works as a fire dispatcher (receives calls about fires), makes 60-65 thousand dollars a year. Her hourly pay increases with seniority, like everyone else who works for the government. Last year she earned 94 thousand because she volunteered to do overtime work (when someone got sick), which pays 3 times more. (Now she's gone on vacation for a whole year! She'll come back and be able to work there again.)
In addition to this, she receives monthly contributions of 9.5% of her salary to her personal pension fund. Employees can choose their own pension fund. The employer is obliged to transfer money to the fund you choose. Pension funds are separated from the state.
My stepdaughter doesn't have higher education, she just finished a 12-week firefighter school (during which she was paid a stipend of 2 thousand greens a month). Plus she's not an Australian citizen - my husband is from New Zealand, so she has a New Zealand passport, meaning she's effectively a foreigner.
The minimum wage in Australia is $16 per hour for part-time work.
Jobs for teenagers
Minors, however, are paid much less. Part-time 14-year-olds only make $10-$11 an hour. They are hired at McDonald's and other cafes as cashiers and kitchen staff, and in clothing stores as salespeople.
The older the teenager, the more he needs to pay. Therefore, it is profitable for business owners to hire schoolchildren. And schoolchildren are happy to gain work experience and money for personal expenses. I have 2 children and my husband has 2 children - all 4 teenagers were already working before finishing school.
My husband has been busy since he was 14 in different jobs. Most rich people here try to send their children to work in their teens. This shows children how difficult it is to live as adults and encourages them to study well so that they can go to university and not have to work for a few more years.
If you move abroad with a minor child, it is possible that he or she will have an easier time finding a job than you. Children learn the language faster (they communicate at school from morning to evening and it takes them less than six months) and there are more jobs for them.
School students are allowed to work no more than 20 hours a week. During the holidays they may be busy longer. Minors, like adults, receive contributions to the pension fund in addition to their basic salary.
My friends work in different positions.
- Cook
- Payroll clerk (government agencies)
- Tax agent (filling out declarations)
- Nurse
- Dental assistant
- Accountant
- Hairdresser
- District doctor
- Seller of lottery tickets
- Waiter
- Real estate agent
- Boutique salesperson
- Casino dealer
- A kindergarten teacher
- Restaurant manager
- TV station advertising agent
Half of my Russian-speaking friends either have their own small business (a small business is considered to be one that employs less than 15 people), or women work in their husband’s company.
What kind of companies do they have?
- Travel agency
- Beauty saloon
- Salon
- Real estate agency
- Production of cakes and sweets
- Gourmet store
- Restaurant
- Attractions and amusement parks
- Excursion bus
- Production and installation of fences
- Used car sales
- Production of plastic products
In general, there is no limit to where an immigrant can work. If you are able to speak the language of the country and are willing to work, all roads are open.
It is not known what 2017 will bring us. Our realities are such that in the CIS it is becoming more and more difficult to ensure one’s own livelihood and happiness for one’s family. The immigration crisis due to the war in Syria is making it difficult for us to find work abroad. But work abroad in the EU and the USA for different types of work qualifications exists and is still in demand. You will have an advantage over illegal immigrants. which blocked France and Germany in that. that you are a specialist and you are legally crossing the border to look for work. Of course, unless you already have a job offer in hand.

The advantages of working abroad are obvious - it is a good income, an opportunity to gain experience, a unique chance to visit new cities and countries. Employment in Europe will help you obtain a residence permit, and in the future permanent residence and, if desired, citizenship. But is it possible to find a job abroad in 2019 without knowing a foreign language at all or knowing only its basics?
The answer is yes, it is possible, but it will be unskilled, often temporary work, possibly unofficial and, accordingly, with a low level of pay. In any case, you will need the minimum basics of conversational speech. There are special training programs for this.
Competition for unskilled work in the European Union countries is quite high among Europeans themselves, so it is very difficult for applicants from the CIS countries to get into this market. And many states do not issue work visas to such workers at all. If only seasonal types of work, the principle is to come, plow and be kind enough to return to your homeland. In addition, the employer will always give preference to a European or a citizen of the country in order to avoid problems with the law and the costs of obtaining the necessary documentation.
So, to summarize, we can highlight the following unpleasant aspects for job seekers in Europe without knowledge of the language:
- High competition with other EU citizens.
- Unskilled work, mostly temporary.
- Need for minimal speaking skills.
- High probability of deception on the part of the employer.
The last point needs to be discussed in more detail. If you do take a solid decision to go abroad for work, then the minimum that needs to be done is to protect yourself from all kinds of scammers and troubles. Perhaps the only way to find a job is to choose a special company or agency that will take care of all the paperwork and help you settle in a new place. And this is where the greatest danger lies. It’s easy to stumble upon charlatans, and you can end up penniless in a foreign country without relatives or friends, and without speaking the local language.
The ideal option would be to find an intermediary under the patronage of friends or someone who has experience working with this company. If there are none, then you need to spend quite a long time on the Internet in search of a suitable agency. Pay attention to various details, the quality of the site, the cost of services, the legality of paperwork, the reality of the expected wages, compare and analyze. Be sure to visit thematic forums and groups on social networks, communicate with people and draw conclusions.
All these actions will not give a 100% guarantee, but the risks of being deceived will become much lower.
). I teach English and Russian as a foreign language at a private school and university. In addition, I am a methodologist, teaching local teachers.
I came to China last fall, before that I worked in Cyprus for 7 years. I found vacancies on the Internet on websites for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers. I searched for about a quarter of an hour. I sent my resume, then interviews began on Skype. They didn’t ask anything special; what was important was the level of language proficiency and teaching experience. I think they hired me because of experience; I’ve been teaching for 15 years. I’m not sure that there was any competition for my place: there are more vacancies than applicants. I arrived in the evening, and the next day at 9 am I already had my first pair.
Why did you choose China? There are most vacancies here and it is easier to find a job. In addition, in Korea or Japan, for example, they only accept people with an “English-language” passport, but in China they do not pay attention to this.
Translated into rubles, I receive 70,000, this is the average salary of a teacher. But you can earn up to 100 thousand, depending on the city.
- If you plan to work as a teacher abroad, get CELTA and TESOL certification, they make finding a job much easier. Check online for teacher reviews of language schools.
- You must obtain the status of a foreign expert and a temporary residence permit.
- Be punctual; lateness is frowned upon here.
- The Chinese love small ones, so bring something for your colleagues on holidays (I always buy fruits and sweets).
Olesya Shaveleva USA Social worker
I won a green card in 2013 and have been living in the USA in Michigan for two years now. I got my very first job as soon as I arrived – a month later. and cooked breakfast there, and then cleaned the foyer. The team was pleasant and friendly, so I didn’t experience any special problems, but I wanted something more interesting and that the schedule was not from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m.
I got a job as a salesperson in a youth clothing store, worked there for a year and was promoted to visual merchandiser (). By the way, I am still friends with the girls from the store, although I was the only Russian there. I also left because of my schedule. I started studying, and it became difficult to combine work, study and family, and besides, I have Small child. Sometimes I think that a Career could have turned out there, well...
A new job in America was not long in coming: I got a job in a Russian company that provides services and assistance to the elderly and disabled. You could say I got into my specialty - in Russia I graduated from Ulyanovsk State University, Faculty of Transfer Specialties (lawyer/social worker), worked as a lawyer from 2008 until her departure.
My clients are people 80-98 years old, I haven’t had any older ones yet. I am responsible, and therefore I am not entrusted with the easiest cases (like cleaning), but care. For example, one of my grannies walks very poorly, the second is paralyzed. I work as a nurse for them, help them wash, dress, feed, go for walks and read to them, put them to bed, and so on. As for studies, I am preparing to receive a master degree (initial academic degree), my two specialist diplomas here were equivalent to a bachelor (bachelor).
I live with positivity and enthusiasm. In Russia there was office and monotonous work, here it was rather difficult physically and mentally, but on the other hand - a good salary and moral satisfaction from the fact that you were appreciated!
The starting salary in America everywhere is about $9-10 per hour, but I started at $7.40 per hour.
- You should not be afraid of any work, as it is an experience.
- You can always look for something new and no one will judge you for it. In two years, I changed three jobs, not taking into account part-time work: I cleaned houses and looked after other people’s children.
- The most important thing is to look for opportunities to acquire a new profession or upgrade an old one, which is what I am diligently doing now.
Irina Gazarkh Israel Accountant
I came to Israel in 2000 for permanent residence, alone with three children. The son was 9 years old, the twin daughters were six. They confirmed my diploma from Russia as an economist-auditor, but it was a formality. In reality, unfortunately, it is impossible to get a job with him.
In the first year, immediately after graduating from ulpan (Hebrew courses), I took an accounting course. My friends lamented that I was wasting my time and money. But despite this, I found a job pretty quickly. I didn’t give up my studies and completed the courses with a higher rank. to the factory and from that time began to make a career. I changed many jobs, I was looking for myself. Now I work as a chief accountant in an investment construction company. With experience it is much easier to get hired.
Salaries in our field depend on where you live. In the provinces, the average is $1,500, with a maximum of two thousand. In the center, $2000 is the average payment. With my experience, you can count on up to $4,500. Such salaries are an exception, but you can still find them.
The main thing for new repatriates is not to listen to anyone and be sure to go learn the language and get a profession. If you have desire and perseverance, then there will be no obstacles to achieving career heights in a new place.
Ekaterina Smirnova France Biologist
I came to France as part of a “family reunification” program to join my husband (he is also Russian), who had been working there for a long time.
I work as a biologist (biochemist), this is my specialty in my university and master's degree. I got a job through my husband (we have the same specialty). His institute was looking for a person who could start working right now, and the head of my husband’s department knew that I was looking for a place. When the contract with them ended, another head of the laboratory from the same institute offered me a vacancy. In general, everything is done through friends.
I have typical laboratory work: pipettes/test tubes, etc., very much tied to the speed of delivery of all sorts of reagents and materials. In Russia it took months, terrible bureaucracy, in France everything is done faster. Perhaps there is more money, but now the financing of science has become much worse. There are also plenty of shortcomings and problems here, of course.
Our salaries are not mega-high: 1800-2000 euros for postdocs (those who defended their dissertation and work as a researcher after graduate school) and up to about 4000 euros for managers.
- Almost always, so you need to make acquaintances.
- I would advise you not to go to graduate school unless running a laboratory is your true calling, because after that there is only one path - to become a manager. You become overqualified and many jobs are unavailable. Overqualified is when you can't be hired for a job because you're too qualified for it. For example, the requirements indicate that a person with a higher education is needed, this may also mean that a candidate’s degree for this particular vacancy will be superfluous. In Europe, it is often formulated this way so that people without higher education have a chance to find a job.
Lada Alexandrova Germany Co-founder of Clutchartproject
I moved to Germany in 2007 from Cyprus, where I worked for 7 years in a shipping company. That year we had a rotation of employees, and it was possible to change the country. I chose Germany and have never regretted it since then. After a year at a branch of my Cypriot company, out of curiosity, I sent my resume to a large German company and was invited for an interview. Since then I have been working there, in the certification and audit department.
When I was pregnant with my second child in 2014, my friends, photographer Lilya Korneli and fashion stylist Olga Shlemer, and I had an idea. We are all interested in fashion and art, we wanted to somehow combine it into one whole. This is how the idea of our art clutches was born: a multifunctional leather accessory with Lily’s personal print.
At the beginning, like any start-up company, we devoted a lot of time and effort to market research and promotion. Neither of us had any experience in marketing, so sometimes we had to reinvent the wheel. In addition, our product was initially designed for a very narrow audience, so we did not expect immediate sales and results. Over the past year and a half, a lot has changed: we are developing, print and online publications are interested in our clutches. Our clients are satisfied and unanimously claim that the clutches are even better in real life than in the photo. This is the best praise you can receive!
My partners and I are very pleased with the development of our business. We are currently working on a new collection, which will be slightly different from the previous one. Starting this year, we plan to introduce a new direction: providing a service that will combine art, communication, photography and getting to know the city. If everything goes as planned, this service will be available starting this summer and pre-registration will begin.
I am not one of those people who give up the old and only then start a new one. I started my own business. Last year I decided to extend it to 3 years, so despite working on my own project, I am still on the company's staff. It gives me a feeling of confidence and allows me to do exactly what I want, and not what I have to do to pay the bills.
My own business has greatly changed my attitude towards corporations and money in general; I realized that it is more important for me to be independent of corporate norms and rules. I very much doubt that after my maternity leave I will return to my company.
During this short period of entrepreneurship, I realized how much pleasure work can bring. I'm not saying that I didn't love my job in shipping, they're just completely different things. I was successful in my business and happy with my career for 15 years. The experience I gained during this time is priceless. I am grateful to fate that I had the opportunity to be part of an international corporation, travel the world and, for example, break glasses for good luck on board a new tanker in a shipyard South Korea. Now I have changed, and my own business is what I want to do.
- Before starting your own business in Germany, I would advise you to seek advice from professionals. In Hamburg, for example, Handelskammer deals with these issues. It doesn't matter how well you know the laws or what your friends have successfully founded. Perhaps in your industry there will be a small reservation that can later add headaches. Consultations are free and you have nothing to lose. Of course, by that time you will need to complete all the necessary papers confirming your legal status and permission to engage in business in Germany.
