Primavera Sound
View almost all the achievements of indie music for the past and current seasons
The Spanish festival is traditionally considered the strongest line-up event on the continent. Each year, Primavera shows who from the universe of indie music has been noted for productive activity: for five days, almost everyone you can wish to see performs in the capital of Catalonia. Along with the most talked about performers of the last twelve months, such as Frank Ocean and The xx, there are also distinguished artists - this year it's Van Morrison and Grace Jones.

Pinkpop
The biggest Dutch festival
In existence since the 1970s, Pinkpop caters to the unpretentious listener and deftly combines both rock and pop artists on its stages. For example, last year tropical house DJ Kygo closed the main stage of the festival, who was then replaced by veteran saccharine RʼnʼB Lionel Richie, who was followed by Paul McCartney. This year, a similar trick will be done again; what is worth at least the intriguing presence of Justin Bieber in the lineup.

Sonar
Two festivals in one - both focus on electronics
Under the banner of Sónar, two completely different events are combined. Night Sónar is located in the industrial zone, where you can meet rave tourists in a frenzy, the location is concrete, there is a lot of sound and light. There is no non-dance music, it's a super rave, usually accompanied by a few rock, pop and rap performances for variety. The main stars of the festival are located here.
The daytime Sónar takes place in the center of Barcelona, its program is thinner and more interesting, the lineup contains experimental projects and many new artists on the rise. In general, the day one is about musical discoveries, the night one is about stars, dances and unrestrained fun.

Roskilde
Giant Danish festival with versatile line-up - from A Tribe Called Quest to Erasure
In terms of scale and list of performing artists, Roskilde comes close to Glastonbury, which is considered the pinnacle of festival summer in Europe. In the lineup, you should pay attention to performers who are unlikely to be seen on the posters of other festivals: A Tribe Called Quest are playing here one of only two European shows planned for this year, and a group led by Fela's son Kuti Seun will perform with the prodigal genius of hip- hop by Yasin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def.
Where is Roskilde, Denmark

Openʼer
Reliable budget festival in the Baltics with a profitable line-up + Radiohead
The Polish Openʼer traditionally has a strong lineup, an affordable price and never runs out of tickets - you can't imagine a more reliable option. This year's line-up of the budgetary Polish festival, located just an hour and a half drive (including crossing the border) from Kaliningrad, is so powerful that the British music press seriously insists on attending it. One more reason: there will be no other affordable way to watch Radiohead this summer.
Where is Gdynia, Poland

Rock Werchter
Giant Belgian festival with respective headliners: Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Imagine Dragons and more
Another festival with more than forty years of history and with a daily attendance of 90,000 spectators. Rock Werchter is located near the picturesque Belgian city of Leuven, populated mainly by students, but during the festival attracts all of Europe. So this year, all tickets for the event were sold out even before the final promulgation of the lineup.

NOS Alive
Rare festival performance by Depeche Mode, as well as almost every major headliner this summer
In 2009, NOS Alive was included in the list of the twelve best music events in Europe by NME. Since then, entrances to the festival have been flying steadily at breakneck speed: tickets for three days without camping have already ended. In addition, this year NOS Alive has a serious trump card in the face of Depeche Mode - a group with one of the most loyal fan bases in Europe. Stadium synthpop classics already performed at NOS in 2013 and made a splash then; there is no doubt that the same will happen this year.
Where Alges, Portugal
Who The Weeknd, The xx, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Imagine Dragons, The Kills, Alt-J, Ryan Adams, Phoenix, Warpaint, Savages, Bonobo, Rhye, Local Natives, Floating Points, Wild Beasts, Fleet Foxes, The Avalanches

Mad Cool
A young economical festival focused mainly on guitar music, with an armor-piercing line-up
All three-day tickets for the relatively young Spanish festival Mad Cool are sold out, which is not surprising. For only €175, the visitor gets the opportunity for three days to see both the main and largest guitar groups of this festival summer, as well as many performers of a slightly lower rank. Among other things, it is worth highlighting artists who are often seen in the United States and who are much less likely to visit Europe: Wilco, Kurt Weill, Ryan Adams and Dinosaur Jr.
Where is Madrid, Spain
Who Foo Fighters, Green Day, Kings of Leon, M.I.A., Alt-J, Foals, Dinosaur Jr., Ryan Adams, Wilco, Rancid, Moderat, Foster the People, Kurt Weill, Slowdive, Trentemoeller, Spoon, The Lumineers, Belle & Sebastian Wolf Alice
How many 1 day - €75 (other tickets sold out)
Dour
Electronics and hip-hop for five days in the south of Belgium
Named after a French-speaking commune in southern Belgium, the extensive line-up of the Dour festival is made up primarily of electronic artists, whose slender ranks are punctuated by rappers; guitar bands are the exception rather than the rule. The festival lasts five days, with hotels in the area is difficult, so the organizers provide visitors with many accommodation options on the campsite. You can live in an ordinary tent, or you can rent a wigwam, rent a hut for two or for a company; the latter option also offers a local area with a separate dining table. There are also options with accommodation in a hut and in a hotel operating directly at the campsite.

Festival Internacional de Benicassim (FIB)
Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weeknd, Ride and more on the coast of the Balearic Sea
The population of the Spanish resort town of Benicassim is 18,000 people, but during the music festival it usually increases by almost ten times. The current Benicassim is unlikely to be an exception: the line-up is traditionally full of artists who attract serious audiences. Separately, it is worth noting the weather regime: during the day the temperature is stable around thirty degrees, so the festival will be hot in every sense.
Where Benicasim, Spain
Who Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weeknd, Stormzy, Ride, Liam Gallagher, Foals, Bonobo, Ride, Kaytranada, Tyler the Creator, Deadmau5, Kasabian, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Peter Doherty

Melt!
Advanced electronics and related genres among giant excavators
Venue Melt! picturesque in itself: the scenes are set among six godzilla-like mechanisms that were once used in mining. The festival is compact, there are ten times fewer people than on giants like Sziget, you can move between stages quickly, and there is no need to look at the artist from a distance of three kilometers. Well, with this low attendance, the lineups are consistently strong - there is something to go for. The stereotype “festival in Germany = techno” cannot be followed: indeed, there are a couple of venues where nothing else sounds, there is a stage that Modeselektor traditionally oversees every year, but in general the line-up is always very versatile and quite advanced.
Where Grevenheinichen, Germany
Who Die Antwoord, Phoenix, The Kills, Kate Tempest, Glass Animals, MØ, Bonobo, Fatboy Slim, Kamasi Washington, M.I.A., Hercules and Love Affair, Samfa, Richie Hawtin, Warpaint, Modeselektor, Dixon, Marie Davidson, Catz ʼN Dogz, Bjarki , Ben Frost, Lorenzo Senni, Aurora Halal, Nao, Marcel Dettman, Julia Govor
pukkelpop
Biggest Belgian festival since Rock Werchter with almost 200,000 attendees
Despite the extensive history of cataclysms and disasters in its history, Pukkelpop remains one of the most sought after European festivals. The secret, of course, lies in the perfectly balanced line-up, which this year has no obvious headliners (except, perhaps, The xx), but is full of names that you rarely see at other European festivals this year, like The Flaming Lips, BadBadNotGood and The Shins.
Where is Kewit, Belgium
Who Ty Sigall, Car Seat Headrest, Vince Staples, Elbow, The Flaming Lips, At the Drive-In, BadBadNotGood, The xx, Chance the Rapper, Clean Bandit, Interpol, Migos, Bearʼs Den, Band of Horses, Benji B, Cypress Hill , Death Grips, Denzel Curry, Flume, Halsey, Jake Bugg, Mac Demarco, Mumford & Sons, Omar Suleiman, PJ Harvey, Samfa, Ryan Adams, Stormzy, Talaboman
How many 1 day - €99, 4 days - €199
Tomorrowland
All the essentials from the world of EDM
The Tommorowland festival takes place near the village of Boom in Belgium and, by a surprising coincidence, epitomizes the EDM music boom that has been going on for many years. Every year at Tommorowland, all the current artists from the drop world play in crazy scenery. As a result, the festival sets sales records: stories about how tickets for an event run out in a matter of seconds have become commonplace.
Lollapalooza Paris
The most popular festival brand debuts in Paris
The most popular festival brand Lollapalooza, created in the early 1990s by Janeʼs Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell, started in Chicago, then acquired branches in South America, and in 2014 came to Europe. The Paris festival is the second on the continent after the Berlin one and immediately boasts an excellent line-up, in which you can not miss the performance of the hip-hop group The Roots - the only one announced in Europe this year.
Where is Paris, France
Who The Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, The Roots, The Hives, LP, London Grammar, Skepta, Milky Chance, Martin Solveig, DJ Snake, Pixies, Alt-J, Liam Gallagher, Editors, Tom Odell
How many 1 day - €79, 2 days - €149
Off
A festival without formal headliners, with an illogical selection of artists - in short, super
Instead of a stereotypical line-up, which is usually offered at European festivals, visitors to the Off in Katowice, Poland, are waiting for miracles and contrasts - at first glance, the casual selection of artists is remembered for a long time. The lineup is far from being called formed, but there is already something to see: Feist arrives with a new, first record in six years, the great outsider Daniel Johnston performs, Boris plays the Pink album from and to.
Where Katowice, Poland
Who Swans, PJ Harvey, Feist, Talib Kweli, Karla Bozulich, Conor Oberst, Daniel Johnston, Jesse Lanza, Royal Trux, Shellac, Thee Oh Sees, Silver Apples, Boris, Michael Gira, Mother Mother, Preoccupations, Riley Walker, The Men , The Black Madonna, Wolves in the Throne Room

Øyafestivalen
Strong northern festival with tempting exclusives
The predictably expensive Norwegian festival Øya is conveniently located in the heart of Oslo and attracts a win-win lineup every year. In addition to the obligatory headliners in the form of Lana Del Rey and The xx, wandering around the summer festivals, Øya also has a place for exclusive curiosities, such as the space rockers Spiritualized, announced this year, who specially engaged the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra for their upcoming show.

Western Europe
Primavera Sound, Barcelona (Spain)
Headliners 2017: Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, The xx, Arcade Fire, Aphex Twin, Solange, Kate Tempest, Grandaddy, Run The Jewels, Skepta.
Prices: 80 euros - 1 day, officially - 195 euros, but only resale tickets worth more than 200 euros are available.
Primavera is one of the most impressive music festivals in Europe. In 2014, 190 thousand people visited it, 292 groups performed on 16 stages. In the 15 years since its founding, Sonic Youth, The White Stripes, Blur, Portishead, Arcade Fire, The XX, Pulp have come to Primavera - and almost all the heroes of modern rock music. No less than the list of participants is pleased that the festival takes place in Barcelona - a city reminiscent of paradise (for more details, see our guide). In 2012, another festival of the same name spun off from Primavera. On June 8-10, NOS Primavera Sound will be held in Porto (Portugal). Here the list of artists is not so big, but also attractive: Bon Iver, Justice, Aphex Twin, Run The Jewels and many others.
How to get there: To Barcelona - a direct flight or with a transfer (Lufthansa, KLM). From the center of Barcelona, the festival can be reached by public transport.
Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, Mending and Nuremberg (Germany)
Headliners 2017: Rammstein, System of a Down, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bastille, Liam Gallagher, Rag'N'Bone Man, Die Toten Hosen.

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park are simultaneous and almost identical festivals. The first will take place at the Nürburgring circuit (previously held at the old air base in the city of Mendig) in western Germany, the second - in Nuremberg (Bavaria). Having played at one of the festival brothers, the artists move to another one the next day. Compared to other summer festivals in Europe, Rock am Ring / im Park is heavier and more uncompromising. Pop stars and electronic artists are sometimes miraculously found in the list of participants, but in general the line up justifies the name of the event.
How to get there: If you are heading to Rock am Ring in Mendige, the nearest airports are Frankfurt (we have a guide for this city, by the way) and Cologne. Getting to Nuremberg is even easier. And in the city itself there is an airport, and from Munich a little over an hour by train.

Glastonbury is the king of festivals, an event that even those who are not at all interested in music know about. In fact, the festival does not need any additional advertising from our or anyone else's side. From year to year, tickets are sold out instantly, before the announcement of the participants, as soon as they, the tickets, go on sale. It's easy to predict the headliners - whoever reigns at the top of the charts this year will lead the Glastonbury line-up. Legends of pop and rock music are also happy to take part in the festival. So, over the past few years, Kanye West, Florence & The Machine, The Who, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Kasabian, U2, Beyonce, Coldplay, Stevie Wonder have been among the main faces of Glastonbury. Every year the festival gathers about 135 thousand spectators. It could have been more, but it doesn't fit anymore.
How to get there: If you managed to get tickets and are seriously studying how to get there, write to us. We will admire and envy white envy. The nearest decent airport to Glastonbury is Bristol. From Bristol Airport, you will need to take a bus to Bristol Temple Meads station, from where buses run regularly to the festival. Prices: 134 euros - 1 day, 268 euros - full ticket.
Roskilde is one of the pioneers of the summer festival movement. It was first held in 1971. They say that everything was terrible with the organization, but the enthusiasm of the creators, inspired by Woodstock, went through the roof. Now, 45 years later, the enthusiasm remains, and they have learned how to organize. Roskilde is the largest music and arts festival in Northern Europe. More than 30 thousand volunteers take part in the event. In the 90s, electronic music was added to the traditionally strong rock scene. It's funny, but true: the festival is famous not only for its rich and stellar musical program, but also for a very peculiar event - the naked people's race. The fastest naked people get a ticket to next year's festival as a prize.
How to get there: The road from Copenhagen to Roskilde will take half an hour. You will have to fly from Kyiv to Copenhagen with a transfer (a direct flight will appear only in August), there are direct flights from Moscow. Werchter, like Roskilde, is an old-timer. The first Verchter was held about 40 years ago - in 1975. In general, the further, the steeper and larger. Werchter is now a four-day concert on three stages with 75 bands and solo artists.

The Nos Alive festival was founded relatively recently (in 2007) and is not yet as famous as the other events on this list. However, the festival boasts both a first-class headlining list and an excellent reputation in terms of organization. The program includes modern indie stars, current pop artists, rock legends and local musicians. What is important, Lisbon is a wonderful city, which we advise any traveler to visit. The music festival, in addition to the charm of Lisbon, is just some kind of holiday. Moreover, after the festival, you can travel around Portugal. For example, to the south - to the beaches. By the way, we have guides for Lisbon and our beloved Sintra, a small town half an hour away.

In addition to the cool musical component, Flow pays special attention to the theme of art - the program is usually developed in conjunction with the Helsinki Institute of Art. Also on the territory of Flow are discussions, seminars and lectures on socially useful and near-cultural topics.
How to get there: The festival takes place within walking distance from the center of Helsinki. Helsinki can be easily and easily reached by direct flight.

Prices: 99 euros - 1 day, 199 euros - full ticket.

Forming the program, the organizers usually try to invite both legendary musicians and still little-known young composers with a guitar. On the posters you can find the names of world pop stars, authors of electronic music, punks, metalheads - there are simply no genre restrictions. The number of visitors to the festival annually is about 180 thousand people.

Every summer, the quiet university town of Novi Sad in Serbia welcomes thousands of tourists in just 4 days. It all started in 2000 with a student protest, and has grown into one of the main parties in Europe. Until now, the festival has not lost its social and political focus. The organizers consider EXIT to be a symbol of progress, an engine of change in society and a key cultural platform in the Balkans. Musically, the festival is quite eclectic. Traditionally, there is a lot of electronics, a separate stage is reserved for heavy music. The headliners of the festival were Guns N’ Roses, Kraftwerk, Arctic Monkeys, Pet Shop Boys, Pulp, Underworld, Massive Attack, The White Stripes. The biggest strength of EXIT is the location. Arriving at the festival, immediately look at the main attraction of the city - EXIT takes place directly in the Petrovaridin fortress of the 17th century. If we have convinced you that you need to go, pay attention to our guide to Novi Sad. By the way, while studying the festival's website, we found that the word "values" is translated into Serbian as "vrednosti". The Serbian language is harsh and unpredictable.
How to get there: The nearest airport is in Belgrade (an hour and a half on the way to the festival). The noble and prudent organizers offer bus transfers from both Belgrade and other airports in the region: Timisoara (3.5 hours on the way), Budapest (5.5 hours), Zagreb (6 hours), Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik (10- 11 o'clock).

Prices: 96 euros at present, on the day of the festival - 112 euros.
The Colors of Ostrava festival takes place on the territory of a former industrial area in the Czech city of Ostrava. The organizers don't have favorite genres: the festival, true to its name, is really colorful and motley. Here and electronics, and jazz, and traditional pop rock, and street performances - everything that you can imagine is placed on 16 stages. Pay attention to the price. With a very decent list of artists, this is one of the cheapest festivals to visit in Europe.
Afisha Picnic, Moscow (Russia)
Headliners 2017: Kasabian, Foals, Mushrooms, Gsh.
Prices: So far, 2500 rubles (about 40 euros). Closer to the date is likely to be more expensive.
Afisha's picnic was included in our list in advance - for the length of service. So far, a few participants have been announced, and it remains only to believe that it will be as great as in previous years. Afisha magazine holds a music festival in Moscow's Kolomenskoye Park every summer. Representatives of different musical genres perform: pop music, rock, electronica, hip-hop, jazz. The main principle is if only the Afisha team would like it. Traditionally, a lot of attention at the festival is paid to interesting Russian bands. The headliners of past picnics were Jamiroquai, Blur, Franz Ferdinand, Pet Shop Boys, Mumiy Troll, Madness, Ivan Dorn, Zemfira. For guests, there is usually a market with clothes, comics, jewelry and other useful and useless things, as well as a large and very cool food court. In addition to concerts, the organizers always come up with other entertainment: lectures and master classes, sports competitions, games and other events.

This role has already been played by Radiohead, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand, The Prodigy, Faith No More, Placebo, The Offspring, Fatboy Slim, Lily Allen, Iggy Pop, Robert Plant and others. Traditionally, the list of festival participants also includes Ukrainian bands. In addition to musical concerts, the festival always hosts performances by theater and circus groups, movie screenings, sports competitions, master classes and other entertainment for guests. The local attraction Luminarium deserves special attention - it is an inflatable structure of a bizarre shape with fantastic lighting. You should definitely come here for the experience.
How to get there: You can get to Budapest by bus, train or plane - WizzAir and UIA operate direct flights from Kyiv. Like Open'er, Sziget is also often organized by bus tours of all sorts of enthusiasts. The festival website has detailed instructions for those traveling for the first time from Russia and Ukraine.
