Most hygiene items can be taken with you into the cabin - for example, a razor with replaceable blades, a toothbrush, a comb (without a sharp tail, sometimes metal combs are not allowed). Nail polish remover is usually allowed to be carried if the bottle is less than 100 ml and does not contain acetone (since acetone is a flammable liquid).
It is forbidden to take only dangerous items in hand luggage- manicure sets (especially scissors), liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml, etc. When we flew to Thailand, we took a manicure set to the salon - while we flew from Russia normally, but during the transfer, small scissors and wire cutters (with pointed edges) were taken from us.

What not to take on a plane
1. Liquids and any liquid substances
If liquids, creams and jelly-like substances do not comply with the rules of carriage, they cannot be taken on board an aircraft. However, the rules are quite loyal: you can take everything you need to the salon.
Rules for carrying liquids on an airplane:
- They must be packaged in vials of 100 ml or less.
- All transported liquids must be in a resealable transparent bag. The total volume of liquids carried by one passenger must not exceed 1 liter.
- The packaging with liquids during the pre-flight inspection is shown separately.
Transparent packaging with a clasp and 100 ml bottles can be bought in many cosmetic chains - for example, such sets are available in Rive Gauche and Rainbow Smile.
Interestingly, many substances are considered liquids during transportation. A list of what you can take on a plane only if the above conditions are met:
- Water, tea, juices in closed packaging
- All cosmetics listed above, including gels and creams
- Jelly products: yogurt, jam, honey, jelly, caviar, etc.
- Soup, pates, mashed potatoes, condensed milk
- Soft cheeses
- Any canned food, pickles, homemade preparations
- Liquid medicines in original packaging (sprays, syrups, gels, non-pressurized aerosols)
Do not take pressurized aerosols on a plane(including hairspray and shaving foam), but in fact it is sometimes possible to smuggle them in containers of 100 ml. You can not transport alcohol with a strength of more than 70 ° - it is already considered a flammable substance.
2. Strong drugs and medicines
Plain pills and medicines mentioned in the first part of the article can be carried without restrictions (but in small quantities). But strong medicines and substances cannot be taken on board the aircraft if there is no need to use them in flight.
It is forbidden to carry narcotic and psychotropic substances, including painkillers (for example, Pentalgin and Nurofen plus).
To take strong medicines on board the plane, you need to show a certificate from a doctor or a prescription (sometimes an extract from the medical history is also suitable). If you cannot provide a medical opinion at customs that you need the medicine during the flight, they will not let it through during the inspection, so it is better to check in all extra pills in your luggage in advance.
If you are flying abroad, you should check the regulations for transporting medicines in those countries. For example, in many states drugs such as valocordin and corvalol are prohibited because the active substance in them is considered a drug.
3. Weapons and toys
On board you can not bring weapons and objects that can perform their functions, be it a knife or a straight razor (electric and razor with replaceable blades are allowed). The same applies to children's toys made in the form of pistols, machine guns, grenades: they are able to sow panic.
4. Sharp and cutting objects
All sharp and cutting objects must not be taken on a plane under any circumstances. These items include:
- Knives and forks
- Straight razor
- Skates and ski poles
- Screwdrivers, drills, pliers
- Metal knitting needles
- Scissors and nail files (small nail scissors with rounded ends can be missed, but not a fact)
At the same time, you can take a selfie stick, an umbrella (not always), a cane with you on board. Syringes and needles are not allowed in the carry-on baggage of the aircraft, but airport staff must allow you to take them on board if you need it for medical reasons, which you can confirm with a certificate.
It is convenient to search for accommodation while traveling with the help of the Hotellook service. It allows you to sort the options by a huge number of parameters and choose the hotel that suits you.
Rules for the carriage of Russian airlines
Still have questions about what you can and cannot take on a plane as hand luggage? Ask them in the comments, we will try to answer promptly.
A traveler who is accustomed to flying by plane knows the rules for carrying hand luggage, including how much liquid you can take on a plane. Of course, among the generally accepted rules there are exceptions, which everyone gets acquainted with on their own. This is important to know, because the liquid that is in the package, the larger volume or more than allowed by the rules of the air carrier, will be seized at the airport. To avoid unpleasant incidents, it is best to prepare in advance.
Before dealing with volumes, you should find out what exactly the airline refers to the concept of "liquid". In addition to juice or water, the list includes: yogurt, baby food, alcohol, honey, seamings, jam, homemade compote, canned food, shampoo, gel, cream, soft cheese (feta, mozzarella). They also include deodorants, if they are not dangerous. If you are not sure that you have correctly determined the amount of liquid that you plan to take on board, then it is better not to risk it. For example, some passengers take canned food with them, the volume of which is 200 ml, and the packaging indicates that the product is 90% solid. But for the security service, this item is clearly considered a violation, since canned food refers to liquids.
How much liquid can you take on a plane. Transport rules:
You can carry no more than 1 liter of liquid in hand luggage. This is the total figure. But at the same time, one container should be no more than 100 milliliters. You can not take with you, for example, a tube of cream with a volume of 200 milliliters, even if there is only half left. Airport workers look at the denomination, which is indicated on the package.
For all tubes and jars of liquid, there must be one common special transparent bag with a zipper. Its size is usually 20 * 20 cm. It is checked by the security service at the airport. Everyone has a different attitude towards liquid containers. Some employees may let them pass without even examining them, while at other airports they will be forced to open a jar to make sure that there are no prohibited substances.
If you are traveling with a child and take baby food with you, then there is no need to put it in a separate bag. Firstly, it does not apply to hand luggage, but to personal items, and secondly, you will not have any questions if you present it to the security service during the check. But here, too, you need to know the measure. For example, the amount of food is strictly limited. It must be taken only for the duration of the flight, no one will allow you to carry 10-15 packages. If a child under 2 years old is flying with you, then you can take baby food with a volume of more than 100 ml.
To transport medicines, you need to understand that not all of them are allowed in other countries. In addition, the same rule of 100 milliliters in one package must be followed, and they require a separate ziplock bag. Be sure to present them at the counter. If they contain, for example, narcotic substances, then you need to have a certificate confirming that you need them with the signature and seal of a doctor. The certificate must contain the date, and the last name must clearly match yours. Sometimes for a flight to another country it is necessary to translate this document into English language. If you do not follow all the necessary rules, then the receiving party may detain you and start a criminal case.
In general, in order not to bother with such details, you can buy a special summer set. It is sold in transparent tubes and jars of 100 ml each. In this case, you will not have unnecessary questions, and the check will be faster.
Transportation of alcohol is considered a separate item. Some airlines completely forbade bringing it on board, while others are more loyal to this issue. If you start drinking alcohol during the flight, you will be fined. And some even do not allow drunk passengers on board.
Products purchased from DutyFree can be transported in packages larger than 100 ml, but they are included in the total weight of hand luggage, which should not exceed 10 kg. If more, then you have to pay extra. Usually buy perfume and alcohol. In addition, these goods must be packed before the end of the flight. They cannot be opened and used during flight.
Red and black caviar also belong to the concept of "liquid". They also cannot be transported in hand luggage in packages larger than 100 ml. So if you are going to take a different volume with you, then it is better to check it in your luggage.

We all take liquids on a trip: shampoo, cream, deodorant. If you want to avoid problems during inspection, study the rules and check in advance how many tubes are in your suitcase. And most importantly, look at what substances airlines consider liquid.
How many ml of liquid can be on the plane?
The rules on the amount of liquids on board are issued by international aviation and are valid at the airport of each country. Knowing the baggage allowance, fly without problems with transfers in Russian and international airports, even if your ticket is without luggage.

Liquids in luggage
Take as much liquid in your luggage as you can carry (or how much luggage the airline allowed you to carry). The main condition is tightness. The contents of the suitcase must not harm or stain the belongings of other passengers, even if the container is broken on the road.
Aerosols and pressurized cans are not allowed in hand luggage. Put in checked baggage: in the presence of a cap, the volume of the cylinder is less than 500 ml and the weight of all cartridges is not more than 2 kg.
Liquids in hand luggage
If you are flying alone, take a maximum of 1 liter of liquid and jelly-like substances into the cabin in individual 100 ml packages. We describe in detail how to fulfill these restrictions.
How do I carry liquid on an airplane?
Pack all liquids in containers of 100 ml or 1 deciliter and wrap in one transparent bag. Do not take more containers (even filled at the bottom), they will not be allowed to fly. Choose a package with a zipper, but this requirement is not critical. Follow the rule: one passenger, one package.
When flying to the US and Canada, the allowed volume is slightly less - 90 milliliters (3 ounces).
Pour all liquids into small containers. Where to get them:
- buy a mini version of your product,
- keep the miniature shampoos provided by the hotel,
- adapt empty containers, such as cosmetic jars,
- buy a flight travel kit: cosmetic bag plus tubes.
Collect the bottles in a bag:
- tie a transparent plastic bag or fix with an elastic band;
- buy a stationery bag with a zip fastener;
- fill the transparent cosmetic bag with a zipper.
It will be a plus if the container has a mark in milliliters. Do not pour medicines, they will only be allowed through in the manufacturer's box. Put everything on top of your bag in case you are asked to show it at the airport.
Where to buy an airplane liquid bag
This package is not uncommon. Look for packing bags with a Zip Lock in a stationery store, the size 20x20 cm is suitable for you, colorless and without a pattern. You will find the same bags in hardware stores.
Choose a transparent cosmetic bag with studs or a zipper in a cosmetics store. In the same place, ask about special travel kits for cosmetics: several empty vials of 50-100 ml in a transparent package.
Amenity kits in supermarkets and fixed price stores are also a great option.
No time to search - take a simple transparent bag or file and put everything in it. Do not tie tightly - during the inspection they will ask you to get the bottles, it is better to fix it with an elastic band.
What applies to liquids in hand luggage?
There are a lot of surprises on this list, so read and remember which substances airlines consider liquid:
- food products: canned food, caviar, pate, sauces, soups, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, jelly, jam, jam, butter, soft cheese, honey, chocolate and peanut butter;
- cosmetics and perfumery: perfumes, eau de toilette, cream, sun lotion, cosmetic mask, varnish, lipstick and lip gloss, mascara, creamy shadows;

That is, all liquid, pasty, jelly-like, puree-like, gel-like, mixture of liquid with solid particles of the airline are referred to these rules.
Why you can't take liquids on a plane
Due to the growth of the terrorist threat and the danger of sabotage on aircraft, at the beginning of the 2000s, security measures were strengthened and the requirements for luggage and hand luggage of passengers were changed. The impetus was the discovery by the British intelligence services of a terrorist cell that intended to detonate a “liquid bomb” on several planes. Due to the difficulty of detecting liquid explosives and combustible substances during the inspection, restrictions were introduced on the volume of containers and the amount of liquid per passenger.
In 2006, the countries of the European Union agreed on an additional safety regulation for civil aviation, it included strengthening the screening procedure, the installation of translucent devices and restrictions on the carriage of liquid substances in hand luggage. In 2007, Russia also introduced such rules. During major events, such as the Olympics, a complete ban on carrying liquids in hand luggage is introduced.
Today, the issue of carrying liquids in hand luggage on an airplane remains very relevant for travelers. Indeed, in duty-free shops, a lot of goods are purchased that they intend to take with them on a trip.
Before you figure out how much liquid is allowed on board an aircraft, you should know what it means. In aviation terminology, "liquid" is not only water, spirits and other drinks. This concept covers goods and substances that have a liquid or viscous consistency.
In civil aviation, the term "liquid" includes:
When transporting soft cheese in its original packaging (tin can), border guards will also classify it as a liquid product. If the original packaging contains soft cheese and hard cheese, then in this case, airport employees are required to take into account their ratio. If the amount of soft cheeses is greater, then the product belongs to the subtype of liquid substances.
How much liquid can be taken on an airliner
How much liquid can be carried depends on the place of transportation: it is in hand luggage or in the main luggage (suitcase, bag, etc.).
hand luggage
Allowed amount of liquid in the aircraft
For example, 200 milliliters will not be allowed on board in hand luggage. You have to leave it at the airport. Like a 150mm bottle of eau de toilette.
Therefore, if a person has expensive perfume or toilet water, it is better to transport it in the main luggage.
Baby food in hand luggage
The question regarding deserves special attention, because if the child is small, then he needs to eat every two to four hours. Carriage restrictions do not apply to children under two years of age. They are allowed to carry jars of baby food and fermented milk products.
If adapted milk formulas are needed for baby food, then it is better not to prepare them in advance, but to do it on board. Otherwise, customs officers may have questions about the composition of the liquid substance.

Flight attendant uses juice to put out plane fire
Liquid volume limits are one of the safety rules. It is allowed to carry liquids in an amount not exceeding 100 ml in one container. The fact is that under the guise of any liquid, you can carry flammable liquid substances or chemicals, from which you can then create an explosive mixture.
If for any reason 100 ml of a permitted liquid substance catches fire, then the flight attendants with the help of fire extinguishers will be able to quickly and without any special consequences eliminate the fire. If more substances ignite, extinguishing the fire will be extremely difficult and threaten an emergency on the airliner.
