How to get from Barcelona airport to the city center. How to get from Barcelona airport to the city center to the hotel on your own and vice versa How long to go from the airport to the center of Barcelona
The very first task facing any tourist arriving in an unfamiliar city is to understand how to get to the hotel or city center from the airport. The same question faced us as soon as we landed safely at El Prat airport in Barcelona, passed through security control and collected our luggage.
El Prat Airport
It is clear that it is better to worry about this issue in advance, although at European airports themselves everything is very “user-friendly” and it is quite easy to figure it out if you have a certain amount of free time and minimal knowledge of the English language.
El Prat Airport in Barcelona
By the way, about the English language... in Spain it is not very good, but this mainly applies to small cities and the Andalusia region. At airports in Spain, and even in Barcelona itself, the staff speaks good English and will always be able to help you.
Let's return to our sheep... so, what are the ways to get to the city center from Barcelona El Prat Airport. Firstly, it is imperative to know which Barcelona airport terminal you are flying into, T1 or T2. Free buses run between the two terminals and you can get to the terminal you need without any problems. I will write about this later, in which case it will actually be relevant for you.
Let's talk in detail about ways to travel from Barcelona airport to the city center.
Getting from the airport by taxi
The most expensive and mostly the most comfortable way to get to the city center. With a taxi it's simple. Exit the airport to the street where the taxis stand. Next, tell the dispatcher the address of your hotel, ask the price of travel to your destination, and if everything suits you, set off.
The estimated cost of a trip to the city center (Plaça Catalunya) will be 30-40 euros.
Taking into account the current euro exchange rate, it’s not even cheap... The travel time will be about 20 minutes. We decided not to use a taxi, because... You can get to the city in 3 different ways, which I will discuss below.
Choose the car you like :)
Aerobus from the airport to Plaza Catalunya
From the airport to Plaza Catalunya, which is the very center of Barcelona, there are blue buses with the Aerobus sign. The letters A1 and A2 indicate which terminal they go to, i.e. A1 goes to terminal T1 and A2 goes to terminal T2. They run every 10-15 minutes during the day, at night N17 and N16 run once an hour.
This service has its own website aerobusbcn.com. Everything is written very conveniently and accessible. There are several stops along the route in the city itself. At the time of writing this article, the fare is 5.90 euros one way, and 10.20 euros round trip, with a return ticket valid for 14 days. Children under 4 years old travel free of charge.
A year ago, I came across a couple of reviews from 2011-2012, which mentioned the price for aerobus A1 and A2 - 3 euros one way. What I mean is that everything becomes more expensive over time, and if you are planning to fly to Barcelona on your own, do not be lazy and go to the carrier’s website, which is listed above, to make sure that the expected price of the trip is correct.
Aerobus schedule and route map
Work schedule:

As you can see, the bus runs quite regularly. The carrier’s website says that the travel time will be about 35 minutes. If you are traveling together, the money savings compared to a taxi will be about 25-30 euros, which is very good, considering that the bus travel time is not much longer than a taxi. It is clear that there are different situations, and sometimes it is better to take a taxi than to go into the city by public transport, for example:
- you are going on a trip with a small child and despite the high frequency of buses, in this case a taxi will be much more comfortable and enjoyable for you, in fact, just like your kinder :)
- you have quite large and bulky luggage, with which it’s not at all fun to walk to the bus stop, and even less fun to get from the final stop to the hotel itself, because Let me remind you that the bus will take you to the central square of the city or another stop along the way, and then you yourself figure out how best to get to your hotel, either on foot or by public transport within the city.
Stop layouts:

We also decided not to use this method, because... an even more economical travel option. Therefore, we decided to get there by public transport.
Travel by public transport
First you need to understand what public transport goes from Barcelona airport to the city?..
From Barcelona airport there are commuter trains Rodalies de Catalunya, as well as city bus number 46.
How to get to the city center by city bus No. 46
From Barcelona airport to the city center you can take this bus. This is an urban route, so T-10 passes are suitable for it. The bus runs approximately every 20-30 minutes. The final stop of the bus is Plaza de España. This is not exactly the city center, and if your hotel is located, for example, in the Gothic Quarter, you will still have to take the metro. The second disadvantage of this choice may be travel time, because... There are a lot of stops along the way, and there may also be traffic jams.
Bus stops No. 46:
1 | Airport, T1 |
2 | Airport, T2B |
3 | Airport, T2S |
4 | Autovia Castelldefels |
5 | Avenida Granvia |
6 | Hospital Oncologíc (Oncology Hospital) (Oncology Clinic) |
7 | Ciencies |
8 | Center Commercial - Gran Via 2 |
9 | Centra del Prat |
10 | Granvia |
11 | Plaça Espanya (Spain Square) |
12 | Avenida Paral.lel (Parallel Avenue) |
It is also worth noting that this is an ordinary bus, there are no luggage compartments, unlike the specialized Aerobus bus, which was discussed in the first part of the article. This circumstance can be an inconvenience, especially if you are carrying large suitcases, because... There is not much space in the bus.
And we did not use this method of transportation, because... Our hotel was in the very center of the city, and the presence of traffic jams on the road could delay us a little on the way.
Traveling from El Prat Airport by commuter train
Hooray! We finally reached the mode of transport we used to get to the center of Barcelona. Barcelona Airport has its own train station, which is located near terminal T2. If you suddenly arrive at terminal T1, then read the first part of my article, where I wrote how you can get from terminal T1 to terminal T2. The name of the train route is Rodalies de Catalunya.
Because Suburban trains are part of Barcelona's urban transport system, and the airport station is located within zone No. 1, then T10 tickets are quite suitable for us, because by purchasing it, the cost of one trip will be 10.30 euros / 10 = 1.03 euros. I will not write detailed instructions on purchasing tickets; near each station there are special machines that are designed for purchasing tickets. The machines accept both cash and credit cards. The only thing is, if you pay in cash, you’ll be more confident in inserting the bills; for a long time, my machine didn’t want to accept them, which even caused dissatisfaction with the Spaniard standing in line behind me. A friend indignantly began to poke me into the scheme for buying tickets, speaking to me exclusively in Spanish, the message was: “Don’t buy a ticket if you don’t understand how to do it.”
This is my point to the question that all people are different and in every country you can meet snobs and neurotics :) Well, God bless him, after 3-4 minutes, we safely bought tickets and went to the station. Trains run every 20-30 and arrive at Saints central train station, from where you can change to the metro and go to your hotel.
The carriages are very spacious and equipped with screens that display the next and current stops. Everything is very convenient.
The photo shows an empty carriage before passengers boarded, but even after all the people entered the carriage it was quite comfortable to ride and it was easy to take seats. The drive to Saints central railway station is about 20 minutes and this time is fixed and does not depend on traffic jams or anything else. If your home is not located near the station, and most likely it will be so, then you will simply change clothes without going outside in the metro, because There is a metro station of the same name in the station building.
We did just that and after another 20 minutes we arrived at the hotel where we had booked a hotel. The total travel time took about 45-50 minutes, and the cost of this pleasure was 0.99 euro per person, which is really very cheap!
In my opinion, if you are young, energetic and traveling without small children and bulky luggage, this method of moving from Barcelona airport to the city center will be optimal for you!
Millions of tourists come to Catalonia every year. Considering that among these people the share of travelers from Russia is about a third, Barcelona is called one of the most popular resorts among compatriots. However, travelers who dream of visiting the city for the first time are unlikely to find their way around the airport correctly. Therefore, we will find out how to get to the city with minimal time and financial losses.
The first thing that interests beginners on trips of this kind is the question: how many airports are there in Barcelona and where is the best place to fly? There are three air terminals near the city. The main one is El Prat, which is located near the city limits, the Costa Brava air hub in Girona and the Reus air hub. Barcelona Airport is the second largest hub in Spain. This complex welcomes domestic flights from Spain and international scheduled and charter aircraft.
The air hub is located 15 kilometers from the center. The time that tourists will spend to get to the central districts will not exceed 35 minutes. Airplanes from Vueling, Swiss, Pobeda, Turkish Airlines, Iberia, and Ryanair land here.
The distance from Costa Brava Airport to the city center is 95 kilometers. Numerous charter flights and low-cost airlines fly here. The road to the capital of Catalonia takes a little over an hour. High-speed express trains, regional trains and regular buses run here for tourists. In addition, travelers have a reasonable alternative - a taxi or car rental.
Reus Airport is the most remote and small complex. It lies 105 km from the city, and you can get to Barcelona from here by express or bus in about an hour. Calling a taxi or rented car is also becoming a reasonable option. However, it is important to take into account that travel along the country’s key highways involves a transport tax for each driver. Since it is appropriate for tourists whose purpose of visiting Barcelona is to fly to El Prat airport, we will find out the details of the journey from there to the center of Catalonia.
Getting there from El Prat
Barcelona's main airport has two passenger terminals and a VIP flight lounge. There is free communication between both compartments. Moreover, the shuttle travel time through the airport is about half an hour. As for external communications, tourists are offered to leave from here by taxi, express train, special route or city bus. In addition, experienced travelers often consider options with car rental or a pre-booked transfer. Let's look at the nuances of how to get from Barcelona airport to the center of Barcelona using each of the listed methods.
Airbus routes
A special route runs from the airport terminal to Plaza Catalunya every 10–20 minutes. Moreover, route A1 is sent from the first (new) terminal, and route A2 is sent from the second, respectively. This point becomes important for tourists who do not know how to get from Barcelona to Barcelona airport - after all, the journey to the airport section you need will take at least 30 minutes. This type of transport is convenient and allows you to get to the city center in 25–35 minutes.
The appearance of the Airbus is quite catchy - the buses are turquoise or blue with the name of the carrier on the sides. You can purchase a boarding pass for this bus either in special terminals, which are marked in the company colors, or directly upon boarding from the driver. Moreover, children who have not yet turned four years old travel for free. For other passengers, the fare is 5.9 €. The ticket is valid for 15 days, so when planning a short trip, it is appropriate to immediately purchase a round-trip boarding pass, which will cost 10 euros 20 cents.
Urban transport
The network of city routes is also well developed here, so travelers who need to get to the city from the airport can easily get to their desired point with minimal financial losses. If you choose a flight that arrives during the day, it is appropriate to use bus No. 46. This route runs through both terminals and ends at Plaza de España. The first bus here starts at five in the morning, and the last route leaves at 23.20.
For people planning a night arrival, it is advisable to pay attention to night flights No. 17 and No. 16. This transport departs from both terminals - bus number 17 from the first, and route number 16 from the second - and goes to Plaza Catalunya. You can leave T1 from 21.55. The route operates until 4.45. And when leaving the city, it is advisable to plan the time according to the return traffic movement - from 23 to five in the morning.
Travel from the second section of the air hub is possible from 23.00 to 4.40. The carrier offers a similar route from the city until 5.10. Moreover, the interval of both flights is 20 minutes, and the cost of the trip is 2 euros 15 cents.
However, for budget tourists, the most appropriate choice is to take a bus. №106 . This route operates 24 hours a day and offers travel from T2 to Plaza España. It is noteworthy that a trip here will cost only 1 euro 40 cents. True, the flight departs once an hour, and the transport route involves a sufficient number of intermediate stops. Because of this nuance, tourists will lose a little extra time on the way.
We travel in comfort
Considering that most tourists, being in the city for the first time, prefer not to take unnecessary risks and order a taxi. There are certain points at El Prat Airport that are useful for inexperienced travelers to know. Here, a taxi is ordered directly at the exit from the terminals, and you can leave only after waiting for your turn. This nuance is regulated by special airport services, and a company representative orders the delivery of a car to a client whose turn to leave has already come.
Finding parking at the airport is quite easy. At the exit from the terminal, tourists will immediately notice a queue and cars painted black and yellow. This is Barcelona taxi.
As for payment, there is a minimum boarding fee of 20 euros. Next, the passenger pays for the trip using the meter. Usually this amount does not exceed 37 €. The time spent on this method of transportation will be about 15 minutes.
You can increase your own comfort if the tourist orders and pays for the transfer in advance. Today this service is available online, so while still in your home country, you can easily choose the appropriate car model. In addition, experienced travelers note that ordering a transfer in advance is cheaper than a similar trip from the airport by taxi. In addition, in this case you save time waiting for your turn to leave.
Travel by rail
The air hub of the capital of Catalonia is also connected to the city center by a railway line. True, trains only run from the second terminal. Therefore, it is advisable for tourists who arrive in T1 to leave by bus or taxi. In addition, it will not be possible to get directly from here to the center - there will be a transfer along the way.
There is also a train connection from T2 El Prat Airport
Electric trains start moving at 5.42 and run until 23.38. Moreover, you will have to wait about half an hour for the next train. You can purchase a ticket in special terminals, which are painted in gray and red tones. You can pay in cash or by card.
Few tourists know that Barcelona operates a system of a single travel coupon, which is valid for a certain amount of time. As a rule, purchasing such a ticket helps you save on travel on city buses, electric trains or the metro. In this case, the tourist receives the right to unlimited use of any type of public transport within the period for which the travel pass was purchased.
Terminal for selling tickets for the electric train "Renfe"
This ticket is sold at special ticket offices and terminals located next to the railway platform. Moreover, when purchasing a ticket, it is important to take into account that the city is divided into several different territories and the validity of the T10 travel card applies only to a certain area. Here the tourist can choose a coupon covering the first zone. After all, most of the hotels, the airport, and the main memorial and cultural places of the city are located on this territory.
The amount of the coupon varies - this point depends on the number of days for which you purchase the ticket. An unlimited two-day pass will cost 14 euros, and a three-day ticket costs 20 € 50 cents. A four-day trip will cost 26.5 euros, and a five-day voyage will cost 32 euros.
Let us also briefly discuss the likely routes around Catalonia and the country that many tourists use. Buses run from El Prato to Andora. Such trips are offered by companies " Directbus" And " Novatel" Costa Brava, where you can get with a carrier " Sarfa", and Costa Dorado (company " Bus Plana") - other available destinations for travelers. In addition, travel within Catalonia is possible - these routes are offered by " Mon-bus" And you can go to the suburbs with a carrier " Barcelona Bus».
Travel options to Barcelona from El Prat Airport
Finally, tourists who have had experience with such trips are advised to think about purchasing a special discount card - the Barcelona Card. It gives you the right to free travel on public transport and a 20% discount on a special bus operating express routes from the airport (“ Airbus"). We hope that the information presented will help you navigate correctly and choose the optimal route.

Barcelona International Airport – El Prat Airport is named after the small town next to which it is located. The distance from the airport to Barcelona is 13 km. You can overcome it by several means of transport:
- by train;
- by bus - regular or special;
- Metro;
- by taxi;
- by car - taxi, transfer or rented.
Before moving on to specific modes of transport, a few words about El Prat Airport. It has two terminals – T1 and T2. They are separated by 4 km, which can be easily overcome by green free shuttle buses Bustransit T1-T2. They run between terminals from 05:30 to midnight at 7-minute intervals. At night, this interval increases to 20 minutes.
Train
You can get from Barcelona airport to the city center by electric trains from the Spanish company Renfe. They depart from the Aeropuerto station at the T2B building of the T2 terminal every half hour from 05:42 to 23:38. Tourists landing at terminal T1 must first travel to T2 on the green shuttle. To exit to the railway station, you need to go through a covered walkway from terminal T2.
The fare on Renfe trains is 4–5 EUR (depending on the final station), travel time is 20–25 minutes. Tickets can be purchased online or from orange machines at the platform entrances. If you have any difficulties, you can turn to the young guys in branded jackets who are on duty at stations and stops. The purchased ticket must be inserted into the opening of the turnstile, after which the entrance opens. Depending on where you need to go, you should get off at one of three stations:
- Passeig de Gracia – to the center of Barcelona;
- Barcelona Sants - to the western part of the city (where the train station is located);
- Clot - to the eastern part of the city.
If a tourist in Barcelona plans to actively use public transport, then, instead of a one-time ticket for a train trip, he can immediately purchase a 10-trip T10 pass for 10.20 EUR from the airport vending machines. In this case, he can travel from the airport to Barcelona for less than 1 EUR. Each T10 pass is valid for 1 hour 15 minutes.
The exact Renfe train schedule in English, fares and reservations are available on the website. Tourists with large luggage should keep in mind that there are no special places for it on trains. The carriages are often completely filled with standing passengers.
Buses
There are two options for buses that can take you to the city - regular buses and special ones. Regular and special bus stops are located 100 m from each other.
Scheduled
From the airport to Barcelona there is bus number 46 and night buses NitBus 16 and 17. Bus 46 operates from 04:50 am to 23:50 at 20-minute intervals. It goes around terminals 1 and 2 and reaches two central squares - Plaça d'Espany or Plaça de Catalunya in 40 minutes. The fare is 2 EUR. There are 7 mandatory stops along the way, not counting on request.
Night bus tickets cost 2.15 EUR. They run at half-hour intervals. Bus 16 carries passengers from terminal T2 from 23:00 to 04:40. Bus 17 departs from T1 terminal from 23 to 5 am.
On the way to the final stop Plaça de Catalunya, night buses make 17 stops, so the journey takes up to an hour. Similar to the train, you can purchase a T10 pass from machines at stops or from the driver and pay less than 1 EUR for the journey.
Regular buses do not have luggage compartments.
Special
A more comfortable way to get from the airport to Barcelona is to use special blue and white buses with the words Aerobus in large letters. They operate from 05:35 am to 1 am, and in about 25 minutes they will take tourists to the desired stop - Plaça d'Espany, Gran Via - Urgell, Plaça de la Universitat or Plaça de Catalunya. A ticket for 5.9 EUR should be purchased from driver, in machines painted the same blue and white color, or in advance on the website... The trip is accompanied by a TV show dedicated to Barcelona.
Unlike trains, you can board Airbuses not only at terminal T2, but also at T1. The movement interval from it is even less than from T2 - 5–10 and 10–20 minutes, respectively. Buses have numbers that coincide with the terminals - A1 and A2, respectively. A saved ticket will allow you to receive a 10% discount on a number of attractions.
Purchasing an electronic ticket online in advance will make life easier for travelers with luggage or children. There is one caveat: on the website in the departure point window you must type Barcelona El Prat in English (the arrival point can be filled in in Russian). The electronic ticket will be sent to your email immediately after payment by card. It is enough to show it to the driver from the smartphone screen. Since the ticket is valid for 10 days from the date of purchase, the departure time indicated on it is conditional.
Metro
Since 2016, the L9 line has extended to the airport. It connected, in particular, both airport terminals T1 and T2. Trains on this line run from 5 am to midnight, on Friday until 2 am, and on Saturday - around the clock. The cost of Bitllet Aeroport from the airport to the city is 4.6 EUR, and the travel time is quite significant - 40 minutes. The T10 pass does not apply to the metro.
Automobile
At the airport you can take a taxi, use a pre-booked transfer or rent a car.
Taxi
Black and yellow taxis are fast (25 minutes), but the most expensive transport for traveling from the airport to Barcelona. Their parking lots are located at the exits of terminals T1 and T2, as well as at three buildings T2A, T2B, T2C of the second terminal. The cost is 25–30 EUR from terminal T2, and 30–35 EUR from T1. To this amount you must add extra charges at night, weekends or holidays. Baggage is also paid separately. If there is no pre-order, a free car in the parking lot will be indicated by a service employee.
The taxi option is more suitable for groups of travelers or wealthy tourists accustomed to comfort.
