What is a must to visit in the Crimea. A trip to the Crimea: what to see, where to go. Shuldan Cave Monastery
There is one gross mistake that every second tourist in Crimea makes, turning his vacation into seals, when, upon returning home, from memories there is only a banana ride and a buffet at the hotel. There is nothing wrong with this, but from my own experience I can say that a couple of days is enough to relax on the beach. Then he begins to pull on walks, and burnt skin requires rest from sunbathing.
So, in order to stock up on vivid vacation impressions for years to come, every tourist and traveler needs to know what to see in Crimea is a must. I have compiled a cheat sheet for you from the TOP - 20 most popular places for tourists on the peninsula. If you can't wait to get this free bonus, read on!
Crimea what to see necessarily TOP - 20 best places
All tourists are different and everyone’s vacation requests are also different, so I divided the interesting places of Crimea into thematic blocks. If you are more attracted to action and you want to catch an adrenaline rush, then you will surely be bored on sightseeing tours, even if they are top-notch and all guides will recommend them to you as a must-see. Listen to yourself and your desires, and choose a vacation to your liking. For example, I can say by myself that diving 200 meters into the caves seemed to me much more interesting than looking at the luxurious interior of the Crimean palaces.
Attractions
1. Mount Ai Petri
Mount Ai Petri should be climbed for three reasons. The first reason is because of the observation deck, which offers a truly beautiful view of Yalta and the Black Sea coast. If you go to the top as part of excursion groups, then the bus will take you directly to the observation point, a well-paved road leads to it, along which you can also drive by car on your own.
There is also an opportunity for a hiker to climb Ai Petri by buying a ticket for the cable car from Alupka. This is the second reason why hundreds of vacationers flock here every day. From the booth you can see the famous teeth, which were shown to the whole world by the Soviet director Gaidai in the film about the adventures of Shurik.
And the last reason is the caves, which are located on the plateau of the same name. We were with an excursion to Ai Petri in August, and the weather at the top did not differ much from the entire temperature in the Crimea. Even in light summer clothes, we did not freeze. So I think it’s superfluous to take warm clothes with you at the height of the season, unless you are going to go down to the caves, where the degree will be lower.
2. Swallow's nest
The Swallow's Nest has become popular among tourists only because of its unusual location. Indeed, this miniature castle in the Gothic style, inexplicably soars over a cliff on a 40-meter cliff. In fact, this object has no historical value, celebrities have not lived in it, and it does not even have an interesting backstory. But it was precisely for his bizarre image that he was painted in paintings, and returning from the Crimea without a photograph against the backdrop of the Swallow's Nest would be considered bad form.
3. Palaces
At all times, Crimea has been a tasty morsel, because of its beautiful natural landscape and mild climate, many rich and important people chose the peninsula as a place for the construction of luxurious palaces and royal apartments. Today, no one lives in the palaces, they are used as museums for excursions of tourists. In fact, there are a lot of palaces in Crimea and you are unlikely to have time to cover everything during your vacation, and you should not do this if your goal is not to write a dissertation on medieval architecture) I will talk about the largest palaces that are most recommended for visiting, based on reviews from tourists.
Livadia Palace
Beautiful name Emperor Nicholas II got his palace from the Greek word "Livadia" - a lawn, impressed by the beautiful local area, and erected this snow-white palace in an overseas Italian style. Now the palace has halls equipped as museums, where you can see the rooms where the Romanov family led its royal existence - the dining room, the emperor's study, the children's bedrooms. It is located in the suburbs of Yalta, just three kilometers from the city. In addition to the Livadia Palace itself, there is a park with paths lined with mosaics, beautiful courtyards immersed in greenery and marble benches.
You can get to the palace as part of an excursion or on your own from Yalta by shuttle bus 5, 11, 27 or 32 and get off at the stop "Sanatorium Dyulber".
Massandra Palace
If the previous palace evokes thoughts of Italy, Massandrovsky resembles medieval French castles from the time of Louis XIII, it is not for nothing that it is called the little Versailles in the Crimea. Now tourists come here to see the museum with the chambers of the emperor and items of royal life, and enjoy leisurely walks through the forest, because the location of the palace is conducive to this.
Near the Massandra Palace is the Yalta mountain and forest nature reserve. Needless to say, walks through the pine forest combined with mountain air have a beneficial effect on well-being, and green lawns with broken flower beds with fragrant flowers will make this day the most pleasant and memorable.
You can get to the Massandra Palace on your own as a hiker as part of an excursion or on your own from Yalta by shuttle bus 29 and get off at the Upper Massandrovsky Park stop. Then you have to walk a little along the road.
Vorontsov Palace
Vorontsov Palace in Crimea - this is the most beautiful and majestic building in Crimea, it combines the luxurious style of romanticism from English architecture and oriental flavor, in honor of the Muslim founders of the city of Alupka. Walking through the territory of the castle, you can feel like a hero of a fairy tale - battlements, turrets, high stone walls. And this pearl of the Vorontsov Palace - the Southern facade, it seems that the doors are about to open wide and the beautiful oriental princess Budur, surrounded by her retinue, will run out onto the balcony.
It is in the Vorontsov Palace that the famous sculptures of lions by the great Italian master Giovanni Bonnani are located, they decorate the stairs leading to the southern facade, and miniatures are sold here as souvenirs. Another attraction of this place is the garden, founded by the famous gardener Kebach, where plants grow from all over the world.
The Vorontsov Palace is located at the foot of Mount Ai Petri and is one of the most popular and visited places among vacationers. You can get from Yalta to the palace complex by taking buses 27 or 32 from the bus station and getting off at the Alupka Palace stop.
Leisure
If you cannot rest for a long time without physical activity and love to spend your time hiking, then there are places in Crimea that are perfect for this.
4. Marble Cave
It is not necessary to have professional skills in caving tourism in order to dive into the most mysterious cave in Crimea. I'll tell you honestly, we also doubted at first, because we had a small child with us, our daughter at that time was only three years old. But with great interest she went through the entire route in the Marble Cave from start to finish, and now she can boast that she saw huge icicles that grow right out of the ground)
In the Marble Cave, everything is equipped for convenient and safe movement through the underground halls, there are paths, steps and railings. Each route is built in such a way that you do not even need the help of a guide, it is quite possible to see the decoration of the Marble Cave on your own, the transition from one level to another is not at all difficult, and as I said above, even a small child can pass it.
I left a review of our visit to two large caves in the Crimea.
5. Cave Emine Bair Khosar
Usually a visit to the Emine Bair Khosar Cave goes in conjunction with the Marble Cave, because they are both located on the Chatyr Dag plateau, and they are separated by a distance of only two kilometers. The cave got its beautiful name thanks to the Tatar saying - “a well on the mountainside”, but the guides prefer to call it the Mammoth Cave in honor of the mammoth that fell into its bowels, the remains of which are now the main attraction of this place.
Other visitors to the cave who often visited here were cave bears, saber-toothed tigers and woolly rhinoceros, their bones rest next to the remains of a mammoth. But no traces of our ancestors were found here, apparently the ancient man was cautious and did not burn with the desire to meet these predators here.
6. Tarkhankut
Is there diving in Crimea, and if so, what can you see there? - such a question we approximately asked ourselves while we were looking for scuba diving in the Crimea. In order to understand what sights await you in the depths of the Black Sea, you need to go to the western coast of Crimea yourself, there is Cape Tarkhankut - an ideal place for diving on the peninsula. It is here that travelers who are passionate about outdoor activities in the wild come, set up tent camps to enjoy the unusual landscape of rocky shores and the calm clear sea.
In addition to diving on Tarkhankut, you can see the sights - the Crocodile rock, swim in the Bowl of Love, swim through the pirate arch in the rock.
You can see a review of how our trip to Cape Tarkhankut took place.
Historical excursions
If you want to get to know the Crimean peninsula better, then you definitely need to get acquainted with its history, because of its mild natural conditions, it has always remained a tasty morsel for conquerors. Greeks, Scythians, Italians, Romans and many other peoples lived in Crimea in different time periods, each of which left its architectural and historical mark on the Crimean land.
7. Assumption Cave Monastery
Due to its unusual location, the Assumption Cave Monastery attracts hundreds of tourists from all over the world to its chambers every year. It is literally carved into a sheer rock, and from the side it seems that it soars in an amazing way over the Gorge of Mary. The reasons for the construction of the monastery in such unusual place several, but the main one is that once on the site of the Assumption Monastery an icon of the Mother of God was found, which, after extraction, as if by magic, returned back to the caves.
The monastery survived many turbulent days, when wars raged and bloody battles raged outside its walls, miraculously managed to avoid the pogrom of the Turkish invaders. Today, on the territory of the monastery there are cemeteries where soldiers of different historical eras, from the Crimean War and the Great Patriotic War, are buried. Another attraction of the monastery is its entrance staircase, with a wall located on one side, where holy places from all over the world are shown with a handful of earth.
You can come to the Assumption Monastery from Bakhchisarai, taking the minibus number 2, the Staroselie transport stop.
8. Genoese fortress
Do you want to see spectacular theatrical knightly tournaments within the walls of a real medieval fortress? Then you definitely need to take a ride to the city of Sudak and visit the Genoese fortress. Within the walls of the sights you can see the main gate, 12 towers, the consular castle, the temple-mosque, the temple of the twelve apostles, a warehouse, barracks and of course the walls of the fortress, serpentine going to the impregnable rocks of the stone ridge.
Review - Genoese fortress, as I was drinking beer honey,.
9. Cave cities
The cave cities of Crimea are another amazing historical attraction of the peninsula, they are all located in the Bakhchisarai region, and if you have an interest in such places, you can set aside a day for a trip. The most popular places where you can come on your own are Bakla, Mangup, Eski Kermen, Chufut Kale. In the Middle Ages, these caves were created by human hands to protect people from frequent attacks by enemies and invaders. The entrance holes are hollowed out in rocky rocks, so you need to move around the cave cities with caution. You can see both residential caves and cave monasteries, temples with frescoes and paintings.
10. New light. Golitsyn trail
The Golitsyn trail is primarily interesting for tourists because it runs along the coastline under the slope of the mountain, as well as some of its sections pass through grottoes and caves. The trail originates from the village known for its wines and champagne - Novy Svet, the village itself is also one of the most beautiful places in Crimea, especially considering its miniature size and location in a natural bay. In the process of passing the trail, such sights as three colored bays, the famous Golitsyn grotto with a wine cellar in the cave walls, a juniper grove and many viewing platforms are visited.
The length of the trail is three kilometers, but despite the short distance, it has strong elevation changes. Therefore, it is better to walk in mountainous terrain in comfortable shoes and with a supply of drinking water in a backpack.
11. Adzhimushkay quarries
In Crimea, there is a place that every vacationer must visit, so as not to forget about the heroism of our ancestors and what price they had to pay for our today's peaceful sky above their heads. This place is a museum on the site of a former quarry, where during the war years people lived and defended from the mines, surviving in inhuman conditions and, with their last strength, repelled the enemy onslaught of the Nazi army. It is terrible to imagine what the occupied residents had to endure. Along with hunger and lack of drinking, the Nazis blew up and blocked the entrances, pumped smoke into the underground adits, and made collapses. Of the ten thousand unfortunate occupied inhabitants who descended into the quarries in 1942, only a few hundred survived.
An underground museum is located near the city of Kerch and it is impossible to miss it, next to it is a giant memorial monument to the heroes of the Second World War.
natural monuments
12. Cape Fiolent
Cape Fiolent is the most picturesque creation of nature in the Crimea, because a volcano has worked on its appearance, today the eruptions of which can be observed in the form of huge blocks of black lava towering above the sea surface. The spectacle is unforgettable, as all tourists say, and I completely agree with them ...
You can swim at Cape Fiolente. But in order to refresh yourself on the local beach, you will have to go down about a thousand unequipped and extreme steps, but the reward will be the cleanest sea in Crimea with a view of the rocks and the almost complete absence of tourists.
It will not be difficult to come to Cape Fiolent in Crimea both as part of an excursion group and on your own. Public transport stop "5th kilometer", then you need to transfer to a minibus going to Cape Fiolent.
13. Demerdzhi
Demerdzhi is the most mysterious mountain in the Crimea and here's why. Firstly, this is not a mountain at all, but a plateau stretching for several kilometers along the Black Sea, near the city of Alushta. The second reason is the bizarre formations in the form of giant stone pillars, reminiscent of statues of warriors, and one of them, due to its similarity with the face of Empress Catherine, was named after her. Thirdly, this is the Valley of Ghosts, a popular place here, so named because of the frequent fogs descending on the valley. When from under thick clouds only the tops of stone sculptures are visible, resembling frozen silhouettes of people.
Incidentally, an interesting fact different time days, Demerdzhi changes its appearance, each time appearing to tourists in a new color, this is due to the amazing composition of the rocks that form the mountain range. Several trekking paths lead to Demerdzhi, passing through oak and beech groves, so you won’t get lost or miss the interesting.
14. White rock Ak-Kaya
Ak Kaya is a sheer white rock reminiscent of canyons from films about the Wild West. It is not for nothing that many directors have chosen this area for filming films; cowboys in wide-brimmed hats riding frisky horses fit perfectly into the landscape here.
But the rock also has a dark history, on the top of Ak Kay in the Middle Ages people were executed by throwing them down from a steep cliff. The robbers arranged hiding places for the loot in the caves of Ak Kai. Famous commanders held meetings on its plateau, and soldiers took an oath.
15. Kara Dag Reserve
Unlike previous natural creations, you cannot enter the Kara Dag Reserve without warning. First you need to clarify the time to visit, book a place for a walk around the reserve, as well as pay for the entrance ticket. But in return, you will get such unforgettable views and emotions that you will remember for a long time.
So why is this place so attractive for a vacationer? Firstly, this place is a real concentrate, where all the most beautiful and rare plants and trees in the Crimea, which are under protection, are collected, you can see natural marble and blocks of solidified lava. Secondly, the famous Golden Gate rock is located here, you can swim through the natural arch and make a wish during a boat trip along Kara Dag.
Thirdly, this is not just a nature reserve, but an extinct volcano that once erupted fiery lava, the black color of the rock reminds of this, it is not for nothing that Kara Dag means Black Mountain in translation. The rest of the sights of the reserve are the museum of the same name, a 7-kilometer hiking trail, and panoramic viewing platforms.
16. Waterfalls
The Uchan-Su waterfall is considered the highest waterfall in the Crimea, but unfortunately its view at the peak of the season leaves much to be desired, in the summer months it almost dries up and in order not to get disappointed from the trip, it is better to plan a visit to the lower but active summer waterfall Dzhur-Dzhur.
Dzhur - Dzhur is the most spectacular and beautiful waterfall in the Crimea, even the name of the waterfall is murmuring. If you come to Abkhazia and do not ride to the waterfall, it will be considered bad form, then when relaxing in the Crimea, you should visit the Dzhur - Dzhursky waterfall. The height of the falling stream is fifteen meters, and along with the water, stones fall from the mountain, so you won’t be able to enjoy swimming, but not many will agree to plunge into the icy water. But on the background of the waterfall, excellent photos are obtained, and if you have not seen such a miracle of nature before, it can impress you!
Health Benefits
17. Estuaries
Crimea is not only beautiful landscapes and sights, but also healing air, unique salt lakes and mineral mud. Arriving in the Crimea to rest, it is quite possible to improve your health and recover from many ailments. Where can this be done if you are not on spa treatment in a sanatorium? The fact is that in the Crimea there are many free natural clinics, which you can use right in the open air, and such wonders of nature are called estuaries.
Estuaries are lakes with a high concentration of salt in the composition of water, and at the bottom of such reservoirs there are therapeutic muds that have a beneficial effect on the skin and the body as a whole. To receive treatment, it is enough to come to the estuary, of which there are a huge number in the Crimea, take a mineral bath and apply therapeutic mud on the body.
You can read a review of how we went to the estuary in Evpatoria Lake Moinaki.
18. Jau Tepe Mud Volcanoes
If you are sure that there are no active volcanoes in Crimea, then you are deeply mistaken. There are amazing natural volcanoes on the peninsula that spewing not fiery lava, but streams of healing mud! In total, there are about seven active volcanoes in Crimea, and all of them are located in the east of the Kerch Peninsula in the village of Vulkanovka. But unlike estuaries, climbing into the mouth of a volcano to smear yourself with mud would be a big stupidity, you can easily fall into a natural crater. Hill mud contains a storehouse of minerals and is used by doctors for health purposes in hospitals and sanatoriums of the Crimea.
Recreational activities
Crimea has long ceased to have the status of a pensioner's holiday, events held on the peninsula are most often aimed at youth and active pastime. Jazz festivals are held here, informal youth gather, many clubs, cafes and other entertainments, nightlife in resort towns is in full swing. What unusual events can be visited in the Crimea, which you definitely will not see at home?
19. Mud fights
This non-traditional sport appeared in Crimea relatively recently and has already gained popularity among spectators, visitors and tourists. Still, after all, beautiful pumped-up girls act as athletes in the arena, but this is not their main quality. What visitors come here for is to see with their own eyes masterful karate techniques, and sometimes even tricks like spectacular acrobatic numbers. Do not be afraid there will be no blood and broken ribs, but you will get an adrenaline rush watching mud fights. And you can also participate in this event personally, each spectator is given the opportunity to enter the ring and measure their strength with gladiator girls.
20. Kazantip
You have probably heard about Kazantip, but you don’t know what it is. Balaklava
A small district in Sevastopol, which is located 20 kilometers from the city center. The main attraction is the bay in Balaklava, which is the most beautiful in the world and convenient for the arrival of ships with goods.
Resort area
At the moment it is a popular holiday destination, which multiplies its status every year. You see the photos for the first time and already want to get there, spend a couple of days in a hot and bright place.
A mandatory part of the holiday is a boat and riding on it in the open sea to explore the coast and wild interesting beaches.
By sea, you will have a view of the unique feature of the Fiolent beach, which attracts tourists with its cleanliness and beauty. It is difficult to move on the soil, because they meet stones, boulders, and moving along the expanses of water is pleasure and speed.
They say that you need to look at St. Petersburg from the water, so you must watch the bays of Balaklava from the sea.
There are a large number of memorable places that are mandatory for viewing, this will be discussed a little later. Near the bay there is the hero-city of Sevastopol, the south of the Crimean peninsula, Bakhchisarai - a territory where there is not enough life to see the surrounding beauties.
The Nazukin Embankment is considered the brightest and most touristic place. From it they look at the amazing mountain ranges of the peninsula, the fortress ruins. Private houses decorate the street, as if built from openwork ribbons.
It is pleasant to walk along the narrow streets of Balaklava in any weather, it seems that you are in another century, in another era, in another country. Besides, this best holiday for those who love active pastime: fishing in the sea, riding quad bikes, diving or kayaking.
A must-visit point is local restaurants that offer delicious Black Sea cuisine and add local color to the holidays.
Attractions
As soon as they start talking about the sights of this territory, immediately it comes to Cembalo fortress- the legendary and famous city symbol.
The turrets go up to the sky and can be seen from any place in the city, which creates a unique urban terrain. The Genoese, who laid the foundation for the history of Cembalo, settled in the port at the end of 1348.
They united in a colony, decided to build a large fortress, the foundation for which they used the building that the Greeks left behind.
The top of the mountain range was the city point - Upper, when the consulate lived in a large castle. Below is the fortress of St. George, whose territory was marked with powerful walls and tower complexes that reach a length of 19 meters.
Reliable floors, which the Genoese invented, were not saved during the raids. There was no quiet time around Cembalo. The topmost tower is considered to be the "Donjon", with the help of which the Balaklava bay is easily visible, as well as a panoramic view of the southern coast of the mountains.
See this place and understand the purpose for which a large number of exciting tribes wanted to have Balaklava in their bins.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when the status of the resort was "peaceful", Balaklava was designated for military purposes. In the Soviet Union, a building was built on this territory that is considered invulnerable to the effects of atomic weapons, it is called an underground plant for repairing a submarine.
The GTS was built in a cut down mountainous place near Chembalo. Under the ground, the canal stretched for 600 meters, and it itself connects the bay and the open sea so that repairs can be carried out freely over the boats, both under water and above water.
The building of worship is St. George's Convent, which is first mentioned in books in 1579.
It is breathtaking, because the building is located at a height of 200 meters above the cliff, it creates a feeling of soaring above the rock massif and the expanses of the sea. Writers were invited here, so the place was valued and considered great.
holy apparition- a rock that is located in the sea near the holy coast, which allows you to slightly open the construction of the monastery, which was mentioned above.
Legends say that at the end of 890, a fishing boat from Chersonesos got into a storm, such that it is impossible to say in a fairy tale or describe with a pen. They hung in the balance from final death, actively praying, thanks to which they remained alive, because the storm subsided. The figure of George the Victorious appeared above the rocky massif, and the fishermen pulled themselves up onto the rocks, where they found the icon of the saint.
Cape Fiolent its beauty is not inferior to other sights. In ancient times, the Church of Artemis was located here, where the daughter of Agamemnon sat in captivity. Many legends of the Crimean peninsula stretch from Cape Fiolent.
By the way, the daughter of Agamemnon was pulled out by Orestes and Pyladas, their names are on the rocks near the nearest coast. Cape Fiolent is the most beautiful corner, which is recognizable anywhere by its yellow-brown colors.
Another local legend says that the cape was called "Tiger" because of its color. This is so because the outlines of a tiger skin appear in the sunset rays.
Of course, Crimea is, first of all, the sea, which means that the first entertainment after swimming should be going out to sea on a boat or a boat.
The city is notable for the fact that it is located in a kind of mountain pocket, so that it is not visible either from land or from water.
The Balaklava bay itself will already leave unforgettable impressions in your memory. Immediately on the embankment, you can negotiate with fishermen or owners of water transport and go to sea. You can go to Cape Fiolent or Cape Aya, which are rich in various grottoes.
Walking can be combined with fishing or swimming. Well, in Balaklava itself, you should definitely also look into the submarine museum, which has both a land part and on a boat you can ride through the places of the “sumps” of submarines.
Golitsyn trail
The sea is unforgettable landscapes, and you will undoubtedly be able to collect a collection of such landscapes in your memory by following the Golitsyn trail.
The Golitsyn trail is one of the most beautiful places not only in the New World, but also in the Crimea in general. Picturesque landscapes and fantastic views from the tops of the mountains can win any heart.
It is believed that the famous Prince Golitsyn became the "father" of the trail. However, few people know that it appeared long before that time. When the Crimean Tatars ruled the local lands, the trail got its name - the road of the infidels.
Why exactly the path of the infidels? The Tatars believed that there was a church in the mountains where Christians went, that is, people not of their religion.
But it was Prince Golitsyn who revived and ennobled the trail in 1912. He did it on purpose, on the occasion of the arrival of Nicholas II and his imperial family.
Therefore, the prince ordered to make the road comfortable, build stone stairs, observation platforms. And in the depths of the mountains, vaults were built where he hid his unique wines.
A visit to the Golitsyn trail is definitely worth the time spent on it.
In general, the walk is not very long, only a few kilometers, but you will have to go through the mountains and rocks, where almost at every corner you want to linger for a few minutes to admire the beauty of the surrounding nature, take a few photos or just relax after a difficult climb.
The Golitsyn trail starts from the northern slope of Mount Koba-Kaya. In another way, this mountain is called Cave because of the many natural grottoes and caves formed as a result of the influence of the sea and the uneven movement of limestone rocks.
The route ends near Cape Kapchik. Being an attraction in itself, the Golitsyn trail has several more places that make it a real miracle of the Crimea.
- Grotto of Chaliapin (Golitsyn)
- Royal Bay
- Juniper Grove
– Cape Kapchik and Turtle Island
Mangup-Kale
If we are already talking about landscapes, then for a beautiful panorama of the Crimean mountains, you should climb Mangup-Kale, which is 20 kilometers from Sevastopol, in the Bakhchisarai region of Crimea. Nearest locality- the village of Red Lighthouse.
This medieval city is built on the hard-to-reach ridges of the Crimean mountains, known as Baba-Kaya, Mount Mangup.
The cave city of Mangup-Kale was previously a powerful defensive fortification, which combined natural conditions and man-made fortifications in the form of towers and walls.
Mangup-Kale is so ancient that scientists still cannot name the exact date of its foundation.
Presumably, the city was built in the VI century AD. But some scientists say that the first buildings appeared here long before the birth of Christ - in the 3rd-4th centuries BC.
Secret passages and catacombs, ancient monasteries, a fortress and stunningly beautiful mountain landscapes - all this is the cave city of Mangup-Kale in Crimea. Today it is the largest monument of its kind located on the peninsula.
The cave city, like a giant, today rises immediately above three green valleys.
From historical sites The citadel built by the Theodorites is the best preserved. In the center of the fortress wall there is a jonjon, which not only served as a protective structure, but also served as a palace in peacetime. Here you can see the ruins of the temple - the octagon.
Next to the fortress wall there is a majestic tower - a symbol of Turkish architecture. Nearby you can see the barracks and guard rooms.
But the most interesting is the man-made caves located on Tekshli-Burun. Some of them can be reached by steep stone stairs.
It is useful to know that this historical monument on a mountain plateau is famous not only for its cave city and fortress walls.
So on the territory of Mangup there are 15 purest springs. And just a few kilometers away is the most beautiful artificial Maiden Lake, which appeared here in 1984. At the bottom of the reservoir you can find blue clay, which has healing properties.
Here you can also fish, ride horses and taste local cuisine in small restaurants.
There are breathtaking views from the top of the fortress, and here many tourists take amazing panoramic photos.
marble cave
If we are already talking about caves, then without a doubt you should visit the largest cave of the Chatyr-Dag mountain range "Marble".
Directly in the cave itself, you can choose the route that suits you or explore everything.
Here you are waiting for:
- Hall of fairy tales, where you can see various creatures in stone sculptures
- Tiger passage, where you can see the remains of ancient animals found here
- Pearl lakes, in the depths of the caves.
Not far from Marble is also the Emine-Bair-Khosar cave, which some tourists consider to be the most beautiful cave in the Crimea.
Monastery caves
Another exciting experience of your summer in Crimea can be monastery caves.
Inkerman cave monastery, Holy Assumption cave monastery, Chelter-Marmara cave monastery, Shuldan cave monastery will amaze you with their energy, which will not leave you indifferent.
Chersonese
Not far from Sevastopol, Tauric Chersonese is located, where the ruins of ancient buildings are perfectly preserved.
It is impossible to express in words the feeling that engulfs everyone who goes out main street ancient Chersonese ashore to the pier, where galleys from Byzantium and Rome moored. One has only to close one's eyes, as the cries of street vendors, the creak of mooring ropes, the clatter of loaders and the abuse of guards make their way through the cries of seagulls.
And still, the eternal sea splashes carelessly over the pebbles, as if 25 centuries had not swept over it, and on the agora near the temple, new citizens still take an oath of allegiance to the great city.
The territory of the Khersonessky Historical and Archaeological Reserve is fully included in the List world heritage UNESCO and especially valuable cultural heritage Russia. Domestic and foreign expeditions are constantly excavating here, making new discoveries every year.
The most valuable artifacts are exhibited in the Hermitage and the Khersones Museum, founded in 1892. But the most interesting exposition is located under open sky- streets, towers, inns, forge, winery, basilicas of the ancient city, telling about the daily life of ordinary citizens.
You can walk endlessly through the ruins, but it is difficult for a modern person to understand the life of the Chersonesites, so it is better to join the tour, which is conducted by the museum staff.
Excavations are not only on the ground, divers of the only department of underwater archeology in the country found the remains of sunken ships, piles of amphoras, lead anchor rods and stones, ruins of piers and port buildings at the bottom.
Here you can plunge into the sea at your own peril and risk, the entrance to the sea here is difficult and not everyone will be given. And also look for ancient coins with images of the Virgin or Hercules. And if you can’t find it, then you can go to consider those already found in the local archaeological museum.
Ghost Valley
Undoubtedly, it is worth visiting the most mystical place in the Crimea - this is the "Ghost Valley" near Alushta. The valley strikes with beauty, uniqueness of a huge number of intricate figures made of stone. Many of them resemble human statues, others - birds, animals.
The natural monument is located in the south of the famous Demerdzhi mountain. This is the second name of the mountain, it means "blacksmith". The first was “Funa”, which means “smoking” in translation. Therefore, it is possible that the legend that goes about the valley is not fiction at all, but a real story from antiquity.
The opinions of scientists regarding the appearance of the valley differ slightly. Some of them believe that there used to be a sea or ocean here. At the same time, this theory was neither refuted nor confirmed.
You can try to walk through this fabulous stone kingdom inhabited by unusual "inhabitants".
True, experienced tourists warn that you need to walk, keeping at some distance from the sculptures, as the weathering processes continue, as a result, many figures change their outlines in front of astonished guests.
The second option of excursions from Alushta through the Valley of Ghosts will also be of interest to outdoor enthusiasts. Not far from this place is a horse base. Here, among the various offers interesting for tourists, horseback riding through amazing natural landscapes is also available.
Tourists prefer to come here for at least a few hours, because it is important not only to look at the fabulous sculptures, but also to see as much as possible.
The Valley of Ghosts resembles an extraordinary theatre, as when the lighting and time of day change, the figures begin to “come to life”, change outlines, outlines, color and, it seems, even shape. It seems that this place lives its own special life!
The famous Nikulin nut is located in the Valley of Ghosts, do you remember in the movie “Prisoner of the Caucasus” he threw nuts at Shurik?
The famous stone "Varley" is also located here, on which she danced and sang "Somewhere in the World" in the same film. Other equally famous and beloved films were filmed in these parts: "Hearts of Three", "Sportloto-82".
Malakhov Kurgan
Malakhov Kurgan is a proud and silent witness to the two heroic defenses of Sevastopol during the Crimean and Great Patriotic Wars.
They began to call the height "Malakhova" in the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the house of the military sailor Mikhail Malakhov stood on the slope, he faithfully served the Russian fleet for 47 years.
He was approached for advice, request, resolution of the dispute. Among themselves, people said, "Go to the barrow, to Malakhov." Gradually the name stuck.
Malakhov Kurgan, located in Sevastopol, will enchant you with its atmosphere of calm and tranquility, and at the very top, an excellent panorama of Sevastopol will open up to your eyes. This place is now very popular among visitors to the city.
In addition to military attributes, Malakhov Kurgan is surrounded by a beautiful park. There are many trees and shrubs growing here.
Some of them were landed by the heads of various states, representatives of official delegations, Soviet rulers, pilots and cosmonauts, for example, Ho Chi Minh, Gagarin, Voroshilov and others.
But one tree in particular attracts the attention of tourists. It is very beautiful and stands in the center of a small fence. This is an almond tree. It is already about two hundred years old, and it has witnessed both defenses of the hero city.
It is interesting that the attraction of Sevastopol Malakhov Kurgan is known not only in the Crimea. The names of streets and metro stations in Russia, France and Great Britain are dedicated to him. Malakhov Kurgan is one of the memorable and heroic pages of the city of Sevastopol and the history of Crimea.
Ai-Petri
Lovers of heights and beautiful views should definitely climb to the top of Mount Ai-Petri. The name of the massif is often associated with the medieval monastery of St. Peter (the name is translated from Greek in this way), the remains of the buildings of which are still preserved on the top.
But there is another legend that tells the story of the original Crimean Romeo and Juliet. The beginning is like Shakespeare's: two lovers who were forbidden by their parents to be together. The young man and the girl decided to commit suicide in order to be reunited in the next world, and climbed the mountain to throw themselves off the rocks.
And then the development of the plot went in a different direction. It turned out that the comfortable platform at the top is very small and two people can't fit on it, so they'll have to jump one at a time. The young man, as befits a man, stepped into the abyss first and crashed on the stones.
And the girl, seeing that death is not as romantic as she thought, changed her mind. The guy from the legend, of course, was called Peter, and the name of the mountain is explained as an imitation of the cry of a girl who saw the suicide of her beloved.
Men in Christian countries since then have always tried to let the ladies go first ...
It is here that the longest in Europe is located, and this fact in itself attracts attention.
But if you are a lover of hiking, then you can also climb the mountain along the Botkin trail, then you can safely assume that you have conquered this mountain peak.
Volcano Kara-Dag
Kara-Dag (sometimes there is a continuous spelling - Karadag) is a unique mountain-volcanic massif. It is located on the southern coast of Crimea between the villages of Koktebel and Kurortnoye.
A very, very long time ago, in the Jurassic period, when dinosaurs ran across the Earth, and the single supercontinent Pangea was just beginning to break up into separate continental blocks, Kara-Dag was an active underwater volcano.
Today it is the only geological site in Europe where you can see with your own eyes the traces of both ancient volcanic eruptions and the subsequent weathering and erosion processes that have shaped this landscape over the past one hundred and sixty million years.
Kara-Dag is the most beautiful and photogenic place in Crimea. But this place is known not only for its amazing beauty.
On the slopes of Kara-Dag, over thousands of years of evolution, a special natural complex has formed, which includes extremely rare and partially endemic species of flora and fauna.
A significant part of them is listed in various Red Books, and the entire territory of the massif is part of the natural reserve of the same name. Due to the protected status, it is possible to enter its territory only as part of an organized tour.
This area is especially picturesque in the spring, when everything around begins to bloom.
Arbor of the winds
The gazebo of the winds in the vicinity of Gurzuf is one of the most romantic and picturesque sights of the entire southern coast of Crimea. It is located on the top of a lonely rock Shagan-Kaya, like a falcon's nest.
By the way, in translation from the Crimean Tatar "Shagan-Kaya" just means "falcon rock". Getting to it is not so easy, but it's worth it.
The Crimean mountains with Ayu-Dag, a significant stretch of the Black Sea coast - all this surprisingly opens up to the eye from here and can be seen for hundreds of kilometers in full view.
Such places can captivate with the grandeur of the views that open up and seem to surround you from all sides in natural grandeur and indescribable beauty, breathtaking and exciting the imagination.
From a height of more than 1000 m above sea level, on the top of a mountain, in a gazebo or next to it, everyone has a unique opportunity, being in one place, to see the entire Greater Yalta and a significant part of the Southern Crimea.

In the summer, a chic Genoese Helmet festival is held there. For the sake of it, role players and history buffs come to Crimea from year to year.
What to see in South Crimea
It is surrounded by the most beautiful south coast park - Alupka.
The photo was taken in December - sunny and green. The park has a huge collection of plants and is superbly laid out - multi-level, excellent lawns that emphasize the beauty of evergreens, cascades of ponds, winding paths and chaos - heaps of huge stones.
You need to visit the Crimea to see. It is also beautiful all year round and every month another unique collection of flowers blooms there: lilacs, irises, daylilies, roses, clematis, cannes and chrysanthemums. The Crimeans themselves go to see the flowering of the latter - "" from year to year.

In the 15th century it became the first capital of the Crimean Khanate before it moved to Bakhchisarai. Balaklava itself is very unusual - it is a narrow bay, deepening far into the mainland. Yachts are moored there, there are several beaches in the vicinity (you can swim in a boat), and on the mountain you can see the medieval fortress of Cembalo.
Be sure to visit the Submarine Museum, this former secret military facility during the Cold War. Mount Ai-Petri and cable car
cabin cable car
Suspension bridge between the teeth of Ai-Petri
Mount Ai-Petri is the most popular of the Crimean mountains, more precisely, this is the name of the peak itself (there are three of them) and the plateau that adjoins it. From Yalta or coastal villages, you can get to the top in two ways: by cable car or by serpentines along a regular road. The view from the top is simply crazy, and besides, you can walk along the hanging bridge between the teeth, or ride a bungee or horses.
The lower station of the cable car is located between Alupka and Koreiz, the fare costs 400 rubles one way (250 rubles for children) or 800 rubles in both directions (long queues at the ticket office in summer). On a regular road, cars and minibuses often run from Yalta, the cost is 1000 rubles in both directions, 500 rubles one way.
How to get there: to the cable car from Yalta by minibuses No. 102 and 132.
Vorontsov Palace
Another top attraction of the Crimea, which is part of any sightseeing tour. A chic palace, organically inscribed in the surrounding mountains and built in the English and neo-Moorish style. It was built as the summer residence of Count and Governor-General Vorontsov, and during the Yalta Conference in 1945 it was the residence of the British delegation headed by Winston Churchill.
A beautiful park deserves special attention, there are also small pebble beaches below.
If you are planning to visit only one palace in Crimea, let it be Vorontsovsky.

Yusupov Palace
The current state dacha, so the passage is possible only as part of an excursion under the watchful eye of the guards. Not much has survived from the Yusupovs themselves, but the place is atmospheric, remembers many famous people. Stalin lived here during the Yalta Conference, his cabinet was almost unchanged, and Molotov, and Prince Yusupov, known for the murder of Rasputin. Spend quite interesting excursion for an hour and a half, after which you can take a walk in the park nearby.
Opening hours: tours are held at 10:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 16:30.
Entry fee: 450 rubles for an adult.

The swallow nest
Without exaggeration, it is a symbol of Crimea, known far beyond the peninsula. Fairy-tale castle on the very edge of the cliff, to which a staircase leads. Along the route there are several viewing platforms and countless restaurants and souvenir shops. Great place but too crowded and noisy.
Opening hours: from 10:00 to 19:00 seven days a week
Entry fee: the entrance to the castle is free, the entrance fee is 200 rubles, but there is nothing to see there.
How to get there: minibuses No. 102 and 132 from Yalta, you can also swim by boat with or without disembarkation.
Livadia Palace
The luxurious residence of Russian emperors, it was here that the Yalta Conference was held and it was here that the post-war order of the world was decided. Here and now summits and conferences are held, and the rest of the time it is a museum. You can take a walk in the park and along the so-called Tsar's path, but they are in a rather neglected state.
Opening hours: from 10:00 to 18:00 seven days a week
Entry fee: 400 rubles for adults, 250 rubles for schoolchildren, pensioners and students - a visit to the main exhibition.
How to get there: from Yalta by minibuses 11, 100, 108 to the stop. "Livadia", then 5 minutes on foot.
Uchan-Su - the highest waterfall in the Crimea (95 meters fall height), is located 6 km west of Yalta near the Bakhchisaray highway. It is best to come here in the spring, when the snow melts in the mountains, or during heavy rains, in the summer it can almost completely dry up.
How to get there: by bus 30 from the bus station in Yalta, or you can take any transport to the sanatorium "Uzbekistan" and then walk about 4 km, in your car - you need to turn off the road near the sanatorium "Uzbekistan" and further up 4 km.
Massandra Palace
Initially, the estate was built by the Vorontsovs, and then it was bought for Emperor Alexander 3. The palace looks absolutely fabulous and like a toy, it is really small in size.
In the pre-war period, a sanatorium was located here, and after that Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev rested like in a state dacha.
Opening hours: from 09:00 to 17:15, on Saturday until 19:15 without days off

How to get there: it is most convenient with a tour, or by any transport (buses, trolleybuses) to the stop. "Upper Massandrovsky Park" and further on foot.
What else to see in Crimea?
Nikitsky Botanical Garden
This is not just a garden with a huge collection of plants from around the world, but a research center. It is pleasant to walk here at least all day, it will certainly be interesting with children. Each plant has its own flowering season, so you are sure to see something interesting. The garden was badly damaged during the Second World War, and so far the infrastructure leaves much to be desired. Another disadvantage is the inadequate price tag for additional exposures.
Opening hours: from 08:00 to 19:00
Entry fee: 300 rubles for an adult, 150 rubles for a school student (for individual exhibitions, the fee is separate)
How to get there: from Yalta minibuses 29 and 29A to the final one, or by any transport to the stop. "Nikita" and then walk down to the entrance to the garden.
Mount Ayu-Dag
Mount Ayu-Dag or Bear Mountain is one of the most prominent landmarks on the southern coast of Crimea. The mountain is a failed volcano and part of a large ridge that will frame the southern coast, such an open-air museum of minerals. It is located between Gurzuf (more precisely, the children's camp "Artek" and Partenit). Several routes have been laid on the mountain, they are marked, so it is difficult to get lost. From the top you have a great view of the surroundings. Take plenty of water and mosquito repellant with you.
Entry fee: in the summer there are foresters, they take 100 rubles.
How to get there: from Yalta - by trolleybuses 52, 53, 55, minibus 110 to the stop. "Cemetery", then on foot until the turn to Artek and along the road perpendicular to the main road; from the side of Alushta, Partenit - by trolleybuses 52, 53, 55, minibus 110 to the stop "Lavrovoe", then the same way.
Mount Demerdzhi and the Valley of Ghosts
When visiting the sights of Crimea, do not bypass the bizarre rocks under Mount Demerdzhi, near Alushta. The ascent to the mountain is of medium difficulty, sometimes there are steep sections. I also recommend the ancient fortress of Funa nearby. It was in these places that some episodes of the “Prisoner of the Caucasus” were filmed, for example, here is the tree from which the hero of Yuri Nikulin fell (he really fell from him).
Entry fee: 50-100 rubles, you can easily bypass the guards' booths.
How to get there: from Alushta, take the bus to the village. Radiant (walks from the bus station about once an hour), then on foot. Or by any bus or trolley bus to the stop. "Radiant" along the highway and further on foot.
