Khao Lak is the perfect resort for a relaxing beach holiday! Video from Khao Lak
For some reason, Russian tour operators bypass Khao Lak resort side. Our compatriots get there mostly on their own. In contrast to the Scandinavians, who took a fancy to it and, apparently, determined the general atmosphere there with their restrained Nordic nature. The most interesting thing is that getting to Khao Lak is not much more difficult than getting to the trampled by tourists.
For those looking for peace
Tours to Khao Lak- this is a real find for those who want to relax, and not “have a blast.” A small number of tourists, among whom Scandinavians with reserved emotions predominate, secluded beaches, and a not particularly developed entertainment infrastructure. Most of all, this town is similar to the beginning of the tourist boom that began 25 years ago.
Main Khao Lak attractions- This is a multi-kilometer beach coastline and dense tropical forests framing it. No one will stop you from meeting the dawn in romantic silence and spending the evening going beyond the horizon Indian Ocean, Sun. You don’t have to worry about getting in line at the nearest restaurant or cafe in advance. It's always free there, and Thai cuisine is the most authentic.
Beaches
Khao Lak is a resort area stretching from the town that gave it its name, a full thirty kilometers north along the Phet Kassem Road. The first place on the way from Phuket will be Ban Khao Lak village and Khao Lak beach. Further to the north are: the village of Ban La On and Nang Thong Beach, the villages of Bang Niang and Khuk Khak, each of which has its own beach of the same name.
Nang Thong Beach and Bang Niang Beach
If a serene beach holiday as such seems too boring to you, then you should stop at Nang Thong Beach and Bang Niang Beach. At the latter, tourists are even offered. In general, all the usual tourist infrastructure - bars, restaurants, salons, and bicycles - is present there. It is believed that best beaches in Khao Lak are located right there. Of course, compared to Patong, it is extremely quiet there, and it is impossible to get lost on the same Bang Niang street with a dozen drinking establishments. Priestesses the oldest profession they work there, so you can leave the “ ” point in the recreation program.
Nang Thong Beach
Bang Niang Beach
Khuk Khak Beach
Khuk Khak Beach, in our opinion, is one of the most beautiful in Khao Lak. At the same time, it is the most deserted (people can only be found near hotels) and remote from those described above. For this reason, Khuk Khak is perfect for lovers of secluded relaxation. Also located here is one of the the best hotels of this resort - The Heaven Khao Lak.
Pakarang Beach
Pakarang Beach is mainly popular among professionals because it offers ideal conditions for this sport. Otherwise the beach is quite large and sparsely populated. Not far from the surf spot there is a fairly comfortable hotel Palm Galleria Resort.
Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is the southernmost part after Khao Lak Beach and is located directly below the hill, near which there are several hotels with magnificent views of the bay. For couples in love, we recommend booking a cozy hotel Sensimar Khaolak Beachfront Resort, located right on the beach.
Pak Weeb Beach
Pak Weeb Beach, which is a continuation of Pakarang Beach, is very popular among tourists, but there is no clear boundary between them. It is distinguished by the presence of vegetation right next to the sea, calmer waves, and sparsely populated areas. Thanks to its snow-white sand, it has a second name - White Sand Beach.
Bang Sak Beach
Bang Sak Beach is located almost in the very north of Khao Lak, near the town of Takua Pa. The place is quite contrasting in terms of population - there are both deserted places and quite populated ones. In the surrounding area there are also many comfortable hotels and small restaurants offering savory dishes. We highly recommend visiting the Haadson Resort.
On the other five beaches, the atmosphere is peaceful and patriarchal. The forest or clean beach sand begins right outside the hotel's doorstep. But if this is not enough for you, then go to the island of Koh Kho Khao. It is located five minutes by sea from Bang Sak Beach. The length of its beach line is almost fifteen kilometers, and there are no more than a dozen hotels. There you can quite feel like Robinson and yearn for Friday.
Cultural program
Attractions. All of them are natural and natural in nature. Khao Lak National Park, waterfalls, clean beaches. Only the monument dedicated to the victims is man-made. This is a police boat abandoned on the shore. It is precisely this natural disaster that explains the fact that most man-made objects in Khao Lak are no more than ten years old. Excursions to Khao Lak are offered by local travel agencies, but you can also go around them yourself.
Khao Sok National Park
Shops and shopping. This type of entertainment is only possible in Bang Niang or Nang Thong, but it will not bring much joy to shopaholic fans. There are few large chain stores in the villages, even 7-Eleven, which is widespread throughout Thailand, is a problem. The markets in Khao Lak offer the usual range of traditional Thai souvenirs and local “delicacies” at reasonable prices. If you can’t live without shopping, then go and visit the Central Festival shopping center.
Local market
Entertainment. The most significant places to have a blast on Khao Lak are Moo Moo Cabaret - a drag queen show, and Zantika Pub - a nightclub. They are located on the main street of Bang Niang. The beaches offer jet ski rentals and other amenities. beach activities. There are massage parlors, you can go to a bar or restaurant. If you have absolutely nothing else to do, then at night you can launch Chinese lanterns into the sky.
Weather
The best weather in Khao Lak observed during our Russian winter. From November to mid-March it is not particularly hot, just above thirty. Sometimes there are refreshing rains. The heat and great dryness begin in April and continue until June. If you want to spend your summer holidays in a bathhouse, then come from May to October. The temperature is above thirty, it rains almost every day (usually at night). Exotics are added by strong winds that disperse high waves. The water temperature in any season is above 27 degrees.
Hotels
Holidays in Khao Lak Can't be called budget. Accommodation and hotels, which can be considered quite comfortable, are somewhat more expensive than, for example, in, although cheaper than in. Top hotels Khao Laka is located in Bang Niang and Nan Tong. There are no rooms cheaper than a thousand baht. There are offers for three thousand. The farther from the water, the cheaper. Along the shore there are, for the most part, hotels that look like bungalows. They are the most expensive. A five-minute walk from them there are three- and five-story guesthouses, which offer rooms for 400-500 baht. You can view hotel options on the widget below or search for others on websites and. 71Khao Lak became the discovery of the year for me, despite the fact that I have already been to Thailand many places. It's a little loud, but I didn't expect to like it so much. I usually don’t go on vacation, but if the question arose about where I could go for a week for a relaxing holiday, then I would go there, although there are no “bounty” beaches or any special architecture there...
But it’s soulful and sparsely populated compared to Phuket and even Koh Samui, which are more like cities than lost tropical resorts. Khao Lak has the balance I need between the tourist infrastructure of the resort and at the same time a small number of people.
I have been planning to visit Khao Lak for a long time, I was wondering why it is not so popular, although it is very close to the international airport. I had to fill the gap on the blog and write my review and mini-guide. And since I also wanted to go on an excursion to and from, I managed to combine business with pleasure.
Now there is already information about Khao Lak on the Internet, including sites in Russian, not like 5 years ago, but bloggers still don’t really like it. This is understandable, Khao Lak is more of a resort where you can have a good vacation, and not a place for wintering. There are no hospitals, no supermarkets, and housing for long-term rentals can be counted on one hand.
On the other hand, not winterers, but ordinary tourists also usually go on vacation to nearby Phuket, and not to Khao Lak, although getting from Phuket airport is not much longer than to Nai Harn. Why? Apparently too quiet and calm, the place is not for those who love entertainment and nightlife.
Alternatively, visit Khao Lak with excursions from Phuket, which is quite inexpensive. True, on excursions the goal is not to see the beaches and the city, but the temples and jungle in the area. Plus traditional elephant riding and rafting. Just keep in mind if you want something like this.
And I’ll list briefly what attracted me to the resort itself.
- Quiet and relaxing holiday
- Minimum of parties, since the contingent is mainly European-retired
- There are few people on the beaches, since the town is small and the beaches are long
- The resort looks pretty nice, many of the cafes are nicely decorated and the buildings have cheerful colors
Transport accessibility: mainland, so no need for ferry and not far from Phuket ()
Quite a nice alley - Bang Niang Road exit to the sea
In general, it is very important for me that there are few people on the beach, so as not to feel like a herring in a jar, but at the same time, I don’t want to relax on a completely deserted island.
I know that not everyone will understand me, and perhaps such a desire for solitude is generally characteristic only of residents of megacities. Although this may be purely my own understanding of relaxation, in which it is impossible to enjoy natural beauties from the crowd.
And I will emphasize again. Perhaps it was just me who thought so, but in some places Khao Lak (mainly Bang Niang) really looks a little different, somehow more civilized and European than many other resorts. And this despite the fact that he is not very popular. For example, the beaches of Kata and Kata Noi in Phuket also look European, but there are many times more people there.
Areas and beaches of Khao Lak
About the beaches of Khao Lak
You must understand that there is no separate city called Khao Lak, this is the name of several villages/beaches united into one resort. Moreover, most of the resort’s territory is fields with palm trees, and the main attraction is Khao Lak National Park, that is, nature, waterfalls and the beaches themselves. Civilization is concentrated in literally several places.
In total, there are 7 districts/beaches in Khao Lak, of which, in my opinion, most will be interested in only 3, just where there is enough infrastructure necessary for vacationers. And another beach (Khuk Khak) is interesting from the point of view of sometimes coming for a swim, since it is not far from the main areas, but not living there. Therefore, we will only talk about 4 beaches and areas:
— Bang Niang Beach
— Khuk Khak Beach
The remaining 3 beaches (Pakarang Beach, Pak Weep Beach, Bang Sak Beach) are completely amateurish, there is little civilization there, and the beaches are worse, the dominance of Thais on weekends (they come for picnics). I was also on the site, which is located on the territory national park between Khao Lak Beach and Bang Niang Beach, but it is not particularly interesting.
My favorite areas were Bang Nian and Nang Thong. And given that they flow into one another without a clear boundary, you can live in both. Looking ahead, I will say that these two beaches themselves are very similar, but I personally would choose Bang Niang. Moreover, many believe that Nang Tong is the first most developed resort, but it seemed to me that Bang Niang is such.
If we talk about the main areas of Khao Lak (where there is civilization), then I liked Khao Lak beach the least, despite its name of the same name as the entire resort.
Firstly, it somehow looks less neat due to the asphalt and crushed stone roads. Secondly, visually it is less beautiful there than in Bang Niang. Thirdly, there is not even a 7-11 there and, in fact, there is only one small street and a couple of alleys, the area is very small. That is, the choice of cafes, hotels, shops is minimal, there is nowhere to go.
In fact, there is no choice, only one normal minimarket, and even then it’s not a 7-11 after all. That is, for me, it’s neither here nor there, and it’s not really in the wilderness, to be alone and civilization is not enough, if not just once. But perhaps someone will like this particular combination.
But the beaches here are excellent. That part of the beach opposite civilization is fenced off from it by a line of casuarinas that create shade in the first half of the day. First-line hotels have their pools and sun loungers right on the shore, for example, the chic The Anda Mani Khao Lak By Epikurean Hotels & lifestyle with a very high rating.
If you come from Phuket, then after quickly passing Khao Lak beach and passing the pass, you will go down the mountain to the village of Bang La On. To be honest, I don’t know if you need to know this name because the beach is called Nang Thong. And the bus driver or taxi driver, if you tell them that you need to go to Khao Lak, will bring you right here. This place It is considered the center of the Khao Lak resort and the most developed, there is even a McDonald's.
The main civilization is located right on the highway, there are plenty of hotels, a 7-11, a bank, and in general, when you drive in the dark in the evening, everything around glows, it seems like the whole city is around. This entire area stretches strongly along the highway, and, accordingly, along the coast. The distance from the highway to the beach is less than, for example, in Bang Niang. There are first-line hotels along the entire coastline; La Flora Resort & Spa Khao Lak is highly praised , although this resort is remote from the epicenter of infrastructure and almost borders Bang Niang.
Most southern part The area is sometimes called Sunset Beach, either because it’s good to watch sunsets there, or because it’s Khaolak Sunset Resort located. But you won’t find such a beach on maps, and there is no border between the beaches at all.
Be sure (and I insist) to check for discounts or special offers on a great service. It will quickly and easily show you discounts in all existing booking systems. In Asia, for example, there are a lot of offers on Agoda.com, which are much more interesting than for exactly the same hotels on Booking.com.
Nang Thong beach is good all the way, I liked it. There are a lot of pensioners walking, two lighthouses, one on the shore, the other in the sea, and quite often there are large stones in the water. .
Bang Niang Beach
Many people believe that the most infrastructurally developed beach is Nang Thong. But it seems to me that this information is outdated, Bang Niang is in no way inferior to it, except that there is no McDonald's. But there is a whole one, even 2.
At the same time, Bang Niang is more compact, since it extends much less along the coast compared to Nang Tong. That is, approximately the same number of cafes and hotels are located in a smaller area, and you don’t need to travel kilometers to get somewhere. And likewise, Bang Niang is not crowded even during peak season. All the photos were taken by me at the end of January, and photos are taken on the beaches.
In general, if I were choosing where to stay in Khao Lak, the hotel would be booked on this beach. Actually, that’s what I did when I came to Khao Lak. In any case, getting to Nang Tong is not a problem, the beach line is not interrupted at all, you can walk and walk, which is what many pensioners do here in the morning and late afternoon.
The entire civilization is concentrated on the highway and near the Bang Niang Road. It overlooks the beach and conditionally divides it into northern and southern parts. Southern part near Ramada Khao Lak Resort beautiful and flows smoothly into Nang Tong. The northern one is partially filled with concrete, but there are strips of beach there where you can swim. Further north it is completely wilderness and desolate. .
If you leave Phuket island on the mainland and take highway No. 4 north, in an hour you will find yourself in Khao Lak. Many people think that Khao Lak is one beach, which is not entirely true. Khao Lak is the name given to the coastal area around Lak Mountain in Phang Nga Province. There are a couple of villages located here, and the coastline of more than 25 kilometers is divided into several beaches. First, it’s worth telling a little about the Khao Lak area as a whole, so that you get an impression of it. This place is suitable for lovers of a relaxing holiday with the whole family or a romantic couple. There is no hectic scene here, just small bars with live music, where you can have a glass of beer or drink an exotic cocktail to the sounds of a local band. During the November to April season, Khao Lak is busy, but during the monsoon season, when the sea gets rough, the number of tourists decreases and some restaurants and shops close. During the low season the waves vary in height and sometimes it is impossible to get into the water.

Khuk Khak Beach
The Khuk Khak area with the beach of the same name is suitable for those looking for a relaxing holiday. Hotels here can be counted on one hand. All of them are located away from Highway 4, so guests visit beach restaurants and massage parlors near the hotels. The infrastructure of the main road is quite sparse, consisting of islands of local restaurants and private minimarkets. However, the drive to the neighboring beach is no more than 10 minutes. Among the attractions you can visit the butterfly park and the morning market, which you can read about below.
Between Bang Niang and Khuk Khak beaches
Pakarang Beach
North of Khuk Khak is Pakarang Beach, named after the cape. At low tide the sea goes far away, I think that is why there are very few hotels here. The beach is perfect for those who like long walks. There are no shops at all in this area, you will only find a couple of beach restaurants.
Pakweep Beach and White Sand Beach - Wikiwand Pakweep Beach and White Sand Beach
On the northern side of Cape Pakarang is Pak Weep Beach - a gorgeous coastline with white sand. The southernmost part of the coast is also called White Sand because of the color of the sand. On the coast you will find several beach cafes, massages, and from the hotels in the northern part of Pakwip Beach you can walk to the main highway, where there are rare islands of local restaurants and minimarts. Among the attractions, it is worth visiting the Sai Rung Waterfall.
Bang Niang Beach
Bangsak Beach
The northernmost beach of Khao Lak area is called Bang Sak. There are several beach restaurants and massage parlors here, as well as a couple of private minimarkets on the highway. From this area, the closest drive is to the village of Nam Khem, where the Tsunami Memorial is located, and to the old town of Takuapa, where an authentic fair is held, read about it below.
Bang Niang Beach Market
Shops in Khao Lak
There are no large shopping centers in Khao Lak, only plazas and small private supermarkets. There are a large concentration of such shops on the beaches of Nang Thong and Bang Niang: Nang Thong Supermarket, Nangthong Park Plaza, Khao Lak Center Point. Here you can buy everything you need for your vacation: sunscreen, beachwear and shoes, some souvenirs. The nearest shopping centers are a 40-minute drive from the center of Khao Lak - Big C in the new part of Takua Pa and Tesco Lotus in Khok Kloi.
Markets in Khao Lak
On Bang Niang Beach near 7-Eleven, opposite the turn to Tsunami Memorial Park with a warship, three times a week they hold a large market where you can buy snacks, Thai food, fruits, beachwear, shoes and accessories. It is called Food Street or Bang Niang Market. It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 10 pm.

Coordinates of the morning market in Khuk Khak: 8.686740, 98.253616
One of the most unusual markets is located in the old part of the city of Takua Pa. A little higher I wrote about the Big C shopping center, from it to Sunday market another 10 minutes drive. The old town of Takua Pa is known for its history dating back to . It is also called the little brother of Phuket Town for its streets in the Chinese-Portuguese style and the special atmosphere that has been preserved local residents. On Sundays, on the streets of the old town of Takua Pa from 15:00 to 22:00, sellers of sweets and other dishes made according to century-old recipes, antique sellers set up their tables, and residents of nearby areas flock to the evening promenade. This market is very similar to, which is a kind of Arbat in Phuket. The Takuapa Fair is held only in high season from November to April.

Transport in Khao Lak
From the village of La On (Nang Thong Beach) during daylight hours, a songthaew - an open bus with two benches - runs north along Highway No. 4. The cost of travel between beaches is only 50 baht per person. In addition, you can always find a local taxi. The cost of travel for a car, see the photos below - these are the official prices from the center of Bang Niang beach (near the tsunami museum and market).

Nightlife Khao Lak
There are not as many eating establishments in Khao Lak as in Phuket. If you are going to Thailand to have fun, it is better to choose discos, bars, etc. Nightlife in Khao Lak is concentrated in the areas of Nang Thong and Bang Niang beaches. There are many bars with live music: Happy Snapper Bar, Monkey Bar, Mr Chay's Bar, WonderlanD Bar and others. In the Bang Niang area, on Highway No. 4, there are two Thai nightclubs Zantika and Build Factory. I would like to say right away that they are far from the European concept of nightclubs. They are rather large, cheerful bars with live music and tables throughout the hall, around which it is customary to dance. If you come there with a group, it will be interesting. In the very center of Bang Niang there is a transvestite show Moo Moo Cabaret Show, where colorful performances are held every day at 21:45.

Attractions Khao Lak
There are quite a lot of attractions in Phang Nga province that are worth visiting. From here it is convenient to get to the island and the Surin Islands, raft the river on a bamboo raft or go rafting in inflatable boat, go or to . In Phang Nga you can visit or explore famous cave The Elephant's Stomach or see with numerous islets. I recommend watching the sunrise at the Samet Nangshe observation deck. In the Khao Lak area itself there are several waterfalls, elephant farms, a Thai boxing school, a national park with jungle paths and an observation deck. And a little further south along the coast there are hot springs and other natural attractions. More details about everyone interesting places near Khao Lak and in Phang Nga province, read the links and see them on the map.
The small island of Khao Lak was previously just a small village. But over time, several small villages located nearby along the coast of the Andaman Sea merged into one large tourist center. With the development of the tourism industry in Thailand, the level of service developed, and new buildings were built, thus, from an ordinary village, Khao Lak turned into a tourist paradise, where developed infrastructure is combined with unique natural landscapes.
Khao Lak Resort is located next to Andaman Sea. It is separated from the ocean by high mountains. It is this favorable location that determines the climate of this Thai town. The weather here is warm throughout the year. The tourist season is officially open here from November to May.
The weather at this time is optimal for relaxation, since the tropical heat is diluted by the northeastern monsoons and sea breezes. At this time, the temperature in the city stays at 25 - 30 degrees. The rainy seasons are characterized by high temperatures and frequent rainfall.
The nature of this town is rich and varied. So that tourists can admire it without risk and take photos against the backdrop of bright flowers and tall trees, the beautiful Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park was created. There wild jungle combined with neat paths, walking along which guests of the kingdom can observe squirrels, exotic birds and other small animals of Thailand. There are also waterfalls that fascinate everyone with their pristine beauty.
Sights and recreation areas
Unlike most resorts in Thailand, tourists come to Khao Lak not for noisy fun, but to relax and retire.

It's best to go there early in the morning to watch the sunrise. Against the backdrop of a morning waterfall one gets best photos. In addition, you can swim there at any time. This is allowed and quite safe.

Another noteworthy natural asset of Khao Lak is the local national park. You can go there from 8:30 to 16:30. You can walk in the park all day long, because there is a restaurant on its territory where you can have a snack if necessary.
From the park you can go to the beaches of Nang Thong or Khao Lak, or walk to the famous Buddhist temple. Entrance to the temple is free for children under three years old, adults pay 100 baht for entry, children under 14 years old pay half that amount.

Also not far from Khao Lak there is such an original attraction as Police Boat 813. At the beginning of the millennium, it was one of two police boats designed to protect the son of a former princess. During the 2004 tsunami, one of the ships sank along with its crew. The second boat washed ashore, and since then it has stood there as a historical monument.
Police boat washed up 2 km from the shore
In addition, you can go to the Old Town and Takua Pa. In the old quarter of Takua Pa there are still quaint examples of old Sino-Portuguese architecture, where tourists stop at literally every step to take photos. There are also plenty of quaint shops and a traditional local market.
Hotels, shops and markets
Despite the absence of large shopping centers and shopping malls in the city, in the resort town you can buy everything you need for comfortable rest. Prices for food in stores are not very high, and in the markets you can try everything Exotic fruits, without spending much. However, it is better to go to the market early, because after lunch the traders go home.
Tourist town opposite Nang Thong Beach, Khao Lak
As for souvenirs, it is better to buy them in the town of Baan La On, which is located next to Khao Laka. On the main square of the city there is a large market where you can buy figurines thai gods, paintings, jewelry and even musical instruments self made.
Souvenirs made of wood and coconut
But if you don’t want to travel that far, you can also find souvenirs in the Khao Lak Souvenir shop near Nang Thong Beach.
It is prohibited to export Buddha figurines larger than 15 cm. Thais consider this an insult to religion.
The most popular place among tourists is the Nang Tong supermarket. It presents a wide variety of goods, both household and grocery. And near each beach you can find small shops where, in addition to household items, you can also buy ready-made frozen foods.
Beach holiday
They are distinguished by their well-groomed and cleanliness. In this quiet resort town you can soak up the snow-white sand and swim in clear sea water, which is not always possible on other beaches in Thailand. There is enough space for vacationers here. Coastline stretches along the sea for ten kilometers. True, the beaches are mostly wild.
Only two of them are developed by tourists: Nang Thong and Bang Niang. The first one is considered the most popular in the whole city. Near it you can find many cozy and inexpensive hotels and restaurants that provide big choice food and drinks. From the shore you can see many sea creatures that you previously only saw in photographs:
- Crabs;
- Turtles;
- Exotic fish, etc.
The southern part of Nang Thong Beach is also known among tourists as "Sunset Beach". Many tourists, coming to this resort, bring home photos with sea sunsets in the background.
Nang Thong Beach is also known among tourists as "Sunset Beach"
The beach called Bang Niang is more suitable for family vacation. A bunch of water attractions, cozy sun loungers and massage parlors will allow you to find entertainment for both children and parents. In addition, next to the beach there is a snake farm and Chong Fa waterfall, so in addition to beach holiday you will have something to do.
Less crowded, but therefore even more attractive beaches that are recommended for visiting are Pakwip and Khao Lak. The latter attracts with its natural beauty, which you just want to save in a photo as a memory of the trip. You won't find any sun loungers or umbrellas there, but the alternative is to relax in the shade of tall trees on the snow-white sand.
Pakwip beach, in turn, is almost deserted, but at the same time attractive. Nearby there are good five-star hotels and Buddhist monastery Baan Pakwip.
Pakwip Beach is the quietest and least developed beach of the resort in terms of tourism
In general, the boundaries between separate beaches are quite conventional and they are all available for recreation throughout the whole year. They are protected from storms by high reefs, so even during the monsoon period you can snorkel, dive, or simply conquer the waves and take photos against the backdrop of the sea.
Transport
The most popular vehicles for transportation around Khao Laku This:
- Knock Knock;
