One spring evening I found myself on Sparrow Hills. In winter, the Observation Deck is not crowded. But with the onset of heat - a real pandemonium.
Motorists drive through Kosygin Street with apprehension: street racers rush past at wild speed, motorcycles roar by. On the very Lookout there are crowds of young people: companies, couples in love. Parking nearby is very difficult.
But the reward is fantastic views of evening Moscow. On the left, skyscrapers mysteriously sparkle, then, almost along the horizon, you can see all the skyscrapers of Moscow (except one, which is right behind you). To the right, the Metro Bridge and the white-and-gold building of the Russian Academy of Sciences gleam. Below, the Moskva River meanders like a dark ribbon, in the waters of which lights are reflected. Yes, the picture is worth it to come here!
Approaching the fence of the Observation deck, we stop, admiring the views of the evening Moscow. How prettier the capital has become in recent years!
Luzhniki and the panorama of Moscow
Springboard on Sparrow Hills
Moscow City and other lights
Hotel Ukraine, White House and skyscraper on Kudrinskaya Square
And here is a small slide show to the music of Jean Michel Jarre Oxygen (part II):
But that was not the most amazing thing. Time seemed to turn back, and I again felt like a 20-year-old student. It was a fantastic feeling!
PS. I chose Jarre's music for the slideshow not by chance: I recalled Jean Michel Jarre's grandiose concert in Moscow in September 1997, when the capital celebrated its 850th anniversary on a grand scale.

Who wants to know Russia should look at Moscow from here.
A. P. Chekhov
There are not many places in the city that are involved in the life of almost every inhabitant. Wedding corteges come here, artists and writers admire the panorama of the city here, schoolchildren celebrate their graduation here, students rest here and skiers train ... In a word, if the Kremlin is the heart of the capital, then Vorobyovy Gory is no less than its soul.
From village to cultural center
According to legend, the Sparrow Hills got their name from the name of the priest Voroby, who owned these territories, who parted with them in favor of the Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna. From that moment until the very 19th century, Sparrow Hills were a favorite vacation spot for Moscow princes and tsars. In Soviet times, the Sparrow Hills were also not left without attention: first, almost by accident, they changed their name to Lenin Hills, and then chose them as the location of the country's first university.
During the existence of the USSR, Sparrow Hills has radically changed. At the time of the foundation of the university (1949), the wooded bank of the Moskva River was inhabited mainly by moose, wild boars and hares (which, by the way, students regularly saw back in the 80s). In 1953, when the university was completed, the design of the observation deck was also completed. Since that moment, the edge of the Sparrow Hills has become a traditional place for national festivities, and not just the residence of kings and princes.
What to see
It is better to start a walk along the Sparrow Hills from the Moscow State University building (from the Universitet metro station 10 minutes on foot or 3 minutes by minibus). Walking along the Alley of Scientists, you will come to the observation deck, from which Karamzin, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gorky, Blok, Bulgakov admired the view, and although the writers of the past saw a completely different city, you will get no less pleasure. You will see the domes and skyscrapers of the capital, the picturesque bend of the Moskva River and the Luzhniki Stadium, located on the opposite bank, in full view. Arriving at the site in the evening, you can easily feel like the heroes of Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita" - it was from here that they set off on their mystical journey.
If the Kremlin is the heart of the capital, then Sparrow Hills is no less than its soul.
Then you will have a path to the Moscow River. Sparrow Hills is a nature protection zone where many plants rare for Moscow have been preserved. There are many animals and birds here, the park provides places where you can feed them. An ecological trail is organized on the territory, convenient for walking. It will also be interesting for children here, in the middle of the walk a playground awaits them.
All year round cable car, which can be used if you decide to return back to the observation deck or shorten the forest walk in favor of the sports one.
Along the banks of the Moskva River, there is a wonderful walking area. Here you can rent roller skates or a bicycle and ride along the river on good asphalt. The Vorobyovy Gory metro station is located on the bridge spanning the river. If desired, you can continue moving up the river to Neskuchny garden. In summer, you can take such a walk on river tram, its station is also called "Sparrow Hills".
The park does not stop even in winter - there is a ski slope here. Sleigh rides are traditionally organized, and a track for cross-country skiing is laid in the park.
Sparrow Hills is the name of one of the most famous parks in Moscow. It is known for the fact that various cultural events are often held here: concerts, sports competitions. Nearby are the Luzhniki sports complex and Moscow State University - the well-known Moscow State University. On Vorobyovy Gory there is an excellent Observation deck with a beautiful view. The observation deck of Sparrow Hills is very popular with photographers. On the Internet you can find many photos taken from it.
In summer V good weather there are always a lot of people here. Mostly youth. There is a rental of roller skates and bicycles. A lot of skiers choose Vorobyovy Gory. Along the embankment of the Moskva River there is a path with a good asphalt surface. On the embankment in hot sunny weather, many swim and sunbathe. Although swimming is prohibited here and there are appropriate signs.
For example, I would not climb into this water. Various river vessels constantly sail here, ranging from boats to barges.
You can ride a boat by going a little further from the impromptu beach to the pier. Only it is worth it, in my opinion, a little expensive, something around 300 r. in 15 min. Approximate price, I don't remember exactly. Who knows, fix it. Ships of the Capital Shipping Company also stop here. can be a good continuation of a walk in the park. You can drive around, i.e. then return again to Sparrow Hills. The ticket will cost 700 rubles. You can get to the Novospassky bridge, which is on Proletarskaya. Look at and from Proletarskaya already go where you need to.
But, back to Sparrow Hills. On the embankment, we saw how the photo shoot was going on: a pretty girl with a minimum of clothes posed for a serious uncle with a large professional camera. My companion had to give an elbow to the ribs so that he would not break his neck, considering whether the shooting process, or something else.
Above, above the embankment of the Moscow River, is, in fact, the park itself. Here, in addition to asphalt paths, there are simply trodden paths. You don’t look like those in heels, all the more so these are still mountains, slopes, trees, roots sticking out of the ground, springs beat, and this is mud, slippery. For walks, it is better for girls to choose more comfortable shoes and a stronger companion so that they can support them in case of emergency. Well, or walk only on paved paths. There are pavilions, in one of which we observed how a company of 7-10 people played, only in the mafia. And from whose submission is this game in Lately became so popular?
The park has several ponds, which are home to a lot of different types of ducks. For comparison, ours is an order of magnitude smaller. On the banks of the ponds, many people have picnics, barbecues, etc.
in winter there is also something to do on Sparrow Hills. When enough snow falls, one of the Moscow ski slopes with a lift, etc., opens here. Fans of snowboarding and skiing can come and try this descent. I can’t say anything about prices, inventory and the quality of the descent, because. I've never been here, and I haven't skied in general.
On the square in front of Moscow State University, a freestyle ramp was built for two years in a row and international competitions were held. Demonstrations were also held here - ski jumping on snowmobiles. An exciting spectacle. Maybe in this (2011) there will be something similar.
How to get there:
Sparrow Hills are located at the metro station of the same name, red line, south of Moscow.
Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Lermontov, Gorky and Blok loved to visit Sparrow Hills. The park is beautiful at any time of the year. And to this day it is considered a favorite vacation spot for citizens and guests of the capital on warm summer days. And in winter, Sparrow Hills become the venue for skiing and snowboarding competitions. Well-equipped lifts and 3 downhill runs, up to 230 meters long, create ideal conditions for training professional athletes and amateurs.
The first settlement on Sparrow Hills already existed in the 1st millennium BC. Excavations carried out in the 19th century made it possible to discover the ancient settlement, attributed by archaeologists to the Dyakovo period.
The name of the mountains, formerly called Sparrow Kruchi, was given by the village of Vorobyevo, which was once located here, and existed until the 14th century. It, according to archaeologists and historians, grew out of that ancient settlement that was discovered in the 19th century. The settlement is repeatedly mentioned in the annals of the Great Moscow Principality and other historical sources. From the 14th century, wooden churches were erected in the village, periodically suffering from the misfortune common in those days - fires. Later, the temple of the Life-Giving Trinity was erected.
The observation deck in the mountains was the most famous point from where Khan Kazy-Girey, Hetman Khodkevich from Lithuania, and in 1812 Napoleon looked at the city. Ivan the Terrible, and later Boris Godunov and Alexei Mikhailovich, loved to relax here.
Today the park is famous for the Moscow State University building, which was built from 1949 to 1956. It is with the need to expand the territory of the university that the demolition of the remains of the village is connected. In memory of him, only the temple remained.
Observation deck Sparrow Hills
A platform was erected at the intersection of Kosygin Street and Universitetskaya Square. This is the top point of the park, from where you can appreciate the stunning view of the surroundings. Through spyglasses, you can take a look at the surrounding beauties at a height of 80 meters above the Moscow River for free.
The first visitors were able to climb the site as early as 1848, when its construction was completed under the guidance of architect V.I. Dolganov. Today this place is very popular among the residents of the city. For cultural recreation, there is everything you need. Therefore, the observation deck is often chosen as a venue for wedding photo shoots, excursions and public events. Guests of the city traditionally take memorable photos here.
To get down from the site, you can walk up the stairs or use the cable car, which is located on the right and is open all year round. The descent has three stops: intermediate, embankment and pier. Liners are always on duty at the pier, on which, in good weather, you can make a river trip. If you wish, you can complement a walk in the park with a river cruise on a boat accompanied by live music.
What can be seen from the observation deck
From a bird's eye view, a beautiful panorama of:
- The Luzhniki Stadium is a landmark in the central part of the park.
- Novodevichy Convent, which rises to the left of the stadium.
- Skyscrapers of Moscow City, located behind the Moscow River.
- Shukhov Tower, located to the right of the park.
In 2018, a fan zone was equipped on the territory of Vorobyovy Gory to watch the World Cup. Equipped with a 27-meter stage and a screen, it is located next to Moscow State University and can simultaneously accommodate up to 25,000 fans.
Cable car on Sparrow Hills
The funicular on Sparrow Hills opened in 1953. At the same time, the local springboard was completed. For more than 60 years, the complex has been very popular with athletes and visitors. And from the chairs of the cable car opens a dizzying view.
The lower landing point is located near the Vorobyovy Gory metro station. The highest starting point is located on the observation deck of Moscow State University. There you will also find ticket offices where you can buy tickets at a cost of 150 rubles on weekdays and 200 rubles on weekends.
If you use the services of a local photographer on the funicular, the price of this service will be 200 rubles. To save money, you can immediately buy a ticket for the ascent and descent, then you can use the discount, as in the case of the travel of a tourist group. Please note that payment is only accepted in cash.
The main attractions of the park
Choice interesting places large enough for a walk in the park. Among the local attractions you can see the following:

- Stele dedicated to A.I. Herzen and N.P. Ogarev. It is known that it was in Sparrow Hills in 1827 that future thinkers swore an oath that they would fight for people's freedom to the end. The stele was erected next to the ski jump.
Most of the sights of the Sparrow Hills, as well as the observation deck, can be visited during one of the sightseeing tours. You can order a guided tour from the Sputnik portal.
ecological trail
This is a local ecological zone, characterized by an unusual natural landscape with springs. The ecological trail in Sparrow Hills was opened in 2005. Information stands and signs provide useful information about the history of its creation, as well as about all kinds of plants and animals that live here.
Basically, the local fauna is represented by moles, squirrels and voles. There are also many different birds here. These are woodpeckers, tits, falcons, warblers, thrushes and nightingales. Walking to the ponds, you can look into any of the pavilions. And do not forget to bring grains and nuts with you, because the squirrels in the forest park are tame, and there are bird feeders.

How to get to Vorobyovy Gory by metro
Sparrow Hills are located at the address: Kosygina street, 28. There are several ways to get here. The first thing to do is take the subway. The following stations are suitable: Frunzenskaya, Universitet and Sparrow Hills.
On the map of the capital, you can also easily outline a route on how to get to the park by car. Parking is located near the site. The current price of seats is indicated on signs and signs.
Acquainted with useful information about the recreation area and with a poster of events can be found on the official website. A detailed map of the Sparrow Hills park is also presented there, according to which you can find out how to get to one or another object in the shortest way.
This slope was formed 150 million years ago, when there was a sea on the territory of Moscow. When it receded, Mamon's settlement appeared here - one of the oldest settlements. Little is known about him. And in 1453, Princess Sofya Vitovtovna bought the village of Vorobyovo near Moscow from a priest nicknamed Sparrow. Hence the name of the area. Although sometimes it is understood literally, supposedly there were many sparrows here.
Sofya Vitovtovna arranged a summer residence in Vorobyovo. It is not surprising that this village was listed among the most valuable property in the wills of the Grand Dukes.
Sparrow Hills were often attacked. Under Vasily III, the Crimean Khan Magmet Giray approached Moscow, from whom the Grand Duke escaped in a haystack. In 1571, Khan Divlet Giray attacked Moscow. And after 20 years, Kazy-Girey, standing on the Sparrow Hills, examined the city. In troubled times, Hetman Khatkevich fled here and then retreated to Mozhaisk. Sparrow Hills was also one of the points of defense against Napoleon's army in 1812. But the position under the city was uncomfortable, and Kutuzov's army left Moscow.
The royal palace on Sparrow Hills was built under Princess Sofya Vitovtovna. It has been rebuilt many times. But only stone foundations have come down to us.
The tsars willingly used the Vorobyov Palace as a pleasure residence. Peter I even started the tradition of firing from cannons here: in 1683 he built a fortress with cannons, firing from which he celebrated his birthday. And in 1707, Peter came to Sparrow Hills to inspect the first mirror factory in Russia. It appeared here thanks to the exceptional quality of sand, which even in the 20th century was used instead of blotting paper.
When Moscow was celebrating the conclusion of peace with Turkey, a new palace was moved from Prechistenka to Sparrow Hills. It was renovated several more times, and was finally broken during the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. True, the temple was never built, and on August 12, 1912, a mortgage cross was placed in its place.
In Soviet times, only a pedestal remained from it. Just at this place in 1978 they installed commemorative sign works by N.A. Shmakov in honor of Alexander Herzen and Nikolai Ogaryov.
We went ahead of them and, far ahead of them, ran up to the place of laying the Witberg Church on the Sparrow Hills. Out of breath and flushed, we stood there, wiping sweat. The sun was setting, the domes were shining, the city was spreading over the boundless space under the mountain, a fresh breeze blew on us, we stood, stood, leaned on each other and, suddenly embracing, swore, in front of all of Moscow, to sacrifice our lives for the struggle we had chosen. This scene may seem very strained, very theatrical, but meanwhile, twenty-six years later, I am moved to tears, remembering her, she was sacredly sincere, our whole life has proved this.
The monument consists of two parts, symbolizing the friendship of young men, and ends with two lamps - the symbols of the Polar Star magazine and the Kolokol newspaper. On the low wall behind you can see the bas-reliefs of Herzen and Ogaryov.
And in the barracks that remained after the unsuccessful construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, a transit prison was set up in the 19th century. Criminals were brought here before being sent to Siberia. It was in this prison that Fyodor Gaaz came every week to get to know better the life and conditions of the prisoners. He did much to alleviate the suffering of the detainees and for this he received the nickname "Holy Doctor".
Few people know that on the Sparrow Hills there is a reservoir of the Rublevsky water pipeline with a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters of water.
By the 20th century, the Mytishchi water pipeline could no longer cope with the increased needs of Moscow. The Moskva River became a possible source of water. September 1, 1900 architect M.K. Geppener laid a reservoir on the Sparrow Hills. After 2 years, it was ready, and a pavilion with an observation deck was even arranged above the reservoir.
At the same time, construction was underway in Rublev according to the project of engineer N.P. Zimin. And by 1904, a water intake, a pumping station, sedimentation tanks, filters and a laboratory appeared there. From here, the water went to the Vorobyov reservoirs and was further distributed to the Kaluga Outpost and Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street. The station is still operating, but access to the Vorobyov reservoir is closed.
With the installation of a water supply system, the Moscow City Duma decided to lay out a park on the Sparrow Hills, but the matter did not move beyond the idea. Nevertheless, Muscovites came here to drink tea and listen to gypsy songs. Back in 1924, one could see peasant gardens with tables dug into the ground, benches and handwritten signs "Wave", "Date of friends", "Eldorado".
Before the revolution, a three-story building of the restaurant of Peter Krynkin stood on the observation deck. All of Moscow was visible from its terrace, and visitors were even given binoculars.
In Soviet times, the building stood vacant for a long time, and then they arranged the main house of the Red Stadium in it. Here they wanted to build a stadium for 40,000 spectators, a sports palace, an open theater and a park named after the Revolution. But the main house burned down, and the idea was forgotten. Only part of the Ostroumovskaya grove was built up with mansions of the party elite. Muscovites called them the testaments of Ilyich.
Vorobyovy Gory has always been a popular holiday destination. In the summer, families came here for the whole day and big companies. Skiing here in winter. The continuation of this pre-revolutionary tradition was the construction in 1953 of a ski jump, a ski slope and a funicular. Another large-scale construction took place in 1949-1953 - the Moscow State University skyscraper appeared.
Now the observation deck on the Sparrow Hills is one of the popular places for Muscovites to relax and one of the main places visited by wedding processions. And on the slopes there is a nature reserve, where you can visit free ecological trails, see rare species of plants and animals, and such unique natural objects, as, for example, Andreevsky ponds.
They say that...... there is no exact date for the renaming of Vorobyovy Gory into Leninskiye Gory, because it was unofficial. It appeared after the mistake of a tired newspaper typesetter, who indicated that the holiday in honor of Lenin would be held on the "Lenin" mountains. And since the whole country saw this incident, in 1936 this name appeared on the maps of Moscow. And in response to the proposal to return the historical name to Sparrow Hills, they said:
- Comrade Lenin is known all over the world, but who knows Comrade Sparrow? .
...the French artist Vigée Lebrun, at the invitation of Emperor Paul, came to Moscow to paint a view of the city from the Sparrow Hills. She stood for a long time and looked at the opened panorama. And then she threw the palette and said: “I don’t dare ...”.
... a birch grove planted by Peter I grew on the Sparrow Hills.
...Fyodor Chaliapin often visited Krynkin's restaurant. And every time he sang, standing over the cliff and looking at Moscow.
... when the film "Alexander Nevsky" was filmed, the sand on the Sparrow Hills depicted snowdrifts.
... initially it was proposed to put the Palace of Soviets on Sparrow Hills. It was supposed to be a giant hemisphere, reminiscent of the sun rising above the horizon.
...people come to Sparrow Hills hoping to start a new life, because it is here that the Moskva River makes a bend in the form of a huge horseshoe. You need to look for a magical place at sunset and certainly alone.
...during the start-up and filling of the Vorobyov reservoir with water, the engineers poured a bottle of champagne bought at the Krynkin restaurant into it so that all Muscovites would celebrate this event.
... all the main buildings on the Sparrow Hills are interconnected by underground passages.
