What’s most interesting is that all the beaches on the island are considered municipal. There are no fenced areas near the water intended only for visiting guests of a particular hotel. Therefore, any vacationer will be able to stay next to a fashionable hotel or a campsite set up on the shore. The only thing is that all accessories on the shore will be paid for. However, no one will be turned away if you come to one of the best sandy beaches of Crete according to statistics with your umbrella and a small rug.

When is the best time to relax on the beaches of Crete
A special feature of the island is its subtropical climate. Lots of sun, no less wind and soft transitions between seasons. Therefore, even in winter there are many vacationers in Crete who come for excursions or shopping.
IN winter months, the average temperature is considered to be within +16...+17°C. At night it is cooler - about +10°C. Throughout the winter, the sea water temperature remains at +16°C. It is during this period that there is no rush and tours fall in price. This is the best time for excursions to interesting historical places, of which there are many in Crete. Wear sneakers and a light jacket.
Video of the fabulous nature of Crete
If in March the air begins to warm up by 1-2 degrees, then real warmth comes with April. During the daytime it will be comfortable (+20°C) and the sea will warm up to +18°C. It is from mid-spring that prices for travel packages begin to rise.
May+23°C in the air is almost comparable to +22°C in water. Although the nights are still cool (+14°C), the beaches are already filled with vacationers. Most of them are families with children.

June It is officially considered the beginning of the season, when the number of vacationers sharply increases, the cost of services increases, but the temperature still remains comfortable (not higher than +28°C). The period is considered favorable for traveling with children.
Heat, July, only without poplar fluff... Season, prices and temperatures are at their peak. During the day it can be up to +30°C, and at night the heat does not drop below +21°C. During this period, hotels in Crete with the best beaches are completely full. Book rooms in advance if you are planning a seasonal holiday. At the same time, get ready to shell out a hefty sum.
The real hell begins in August, when at +35°C and above the stone-paved city streets become hot, and the sand burns your feet. During this period, the winds, which gain strength towards the end of summer, save the day. Therefore, the flow of people who want to swim in the warm sea of +25...+26°C and get it is not decreasing. Prices, by the way, also remain “at the level”.

September And October are considered velvet months with warm weather, but already gentle sun. During this period, the sea is truly gentle, and relaxation brings real pleasure. Swimming can be alternated with excursions, and the cost will be much cheaper than in the previous August.
Do you want to go to the sea with November By April- also not a question. Come in the autumn-winter period or from the very beginning of spring. At this time, it is especially easy to breathe near water. You can also swim in the warm hotel pool.

Where are the best beaches in Crete – the most popular question among all vacationers on the island. In this article we will talk about which of the three seas washing Crete is best suited for families with children, where to go for entertainment, and where an atmosphere of peace reigns. Make your vacation unforgettable - choose the best beaches of Crete on the map (Russian) at the bottom of the page and hit the road!
Beaches of the island of Crete - general characteristics
Crete is washed on all sides by the waters of different waters of the Mediterranean Sea:
The beach season in Crete lasts from May to November. Best time for holidays on the island - autumn, during this period the air temperature rises to 27°C (in spring +20-+24°C, in summer up to +31°C), and the water warms up to 25°C (in spring up to +22°C, in summer up to +27°C).
The best beaches in Crete - listed by name
Elafonisi
One of the most beautiful beaches of the island is located in the western part of Crete, on the island of the same name. The calm and clear sea in this place has different depths - both adults and children will find a suitable option. Entry into the water is gradual and safe, there are no stones or slabs nearby, the coast is covered with white and pink sand.
The number of people on the beach is large at any time of the year. The majority of tourists come here by bus, so the peak time for visiting Elafonisi is 11-16 hours.
The infrastructure on the beach includes toilets and changing rooms, paid umbrellas and sun loungers. Among the public establishments there is only a small cafe (drinks and sandwiches/hot dogs are on the menu); there are no organized entertainment centers. Due to the large number of tourists, access to facilities often requires queuing, and many cafe items are sold out before evening. Before leaving, we advise you to stock up on food and water, and also take an umbrella or awning with you (there is almost no natural shade).
Important! If you are driving to the beach by car, be careful and have plenty of time - the road leading to Elafonisi is a narrow, partly dirt road with frequent traffic jams. There is no organized parking at this location.
Kedrodasos
A sandy wild beach with wonderful views is also located in the western part of the island. This place is a paradise for lovers have a relaxing holiday and untouched nature. There is a juniper forest right by the sea, a little further there are hills and black stones, and in the distance you can see massive mountains.
There are practically no tourists on Kedrodasos, but this place is popular with local residents. Those who want to admire the beautiful scenery should take into account that there is no infrastructure on the beach at all, so you only need to take water, food, creams and other things with you.
The water on Kedrodasos is warm and clear. In summer, strong winds often blow here, causing waves to rise in the sea. The only shade on the beach is provided by junipers, but they are often surrounded by large slabs or stones.
The main disadvantage of the beach is its inconvenient location. It is located 40 km from the city of Kissamos and can only be reached by car on a dirt road or on foot (30 minutes from Elafonisi over very rough terrain).
Marmara
Marble Beach got its name thanks to the beautiful caves located near the shore. This is the best place for snorkeling and diving; many tourists include it on the list of must-see attractions in Crete.
Marmara is a small beach, not designed for a large number of tourists. There are only a few dozen paid sun loungers and umbrellas here, an excellent tavern with low prices And delicious food, boat rental area. The beach is covered with small pebbles, entry into the water is easy, and waves are rare. A very picturesque place.
Note! They don't lead to the island car roads, so you can get here either by boat (regular departures from Loutro, located 7 km away), or on foot, if you are on the desired part of the island.
This is not just the most beautiful beach on Crete, Balos Lagoon is a real symbol of the island. Photos taken in this place, where three seas come together, decorate half of the magnets and keychains of Greece, and the impressions and views that await you here will forever decorate your memory.
One of the best beaches in Crete is located in the bay of the same name, so getting here is not an easy task. The only transport that goes to the lagoon is a taxi or a rented car (Important: the road near the beach is paid), but you can also get here by ship as part of an excursion.
Small Balos is covered with a thin layer of pink sand, under which there are small and large pebbles. Umbrellas and sun loungers are placed throughout its area, which can be rented for a fee. The sea in this place is very warm, but shallow, which cannot but please families with children.
The infrastructure on the beach is not developed, but that is not why tourists come here. If you also want to take a photo of the most beautiful beach of Crete, going up to the observation deck, go a little towards the parking lot - there is a greater view here and it is safer.
Advice! Take special swimming slippers or flip flops with you, as there are small stones near the shore and at the bottom of the sea. Also don't forget water, food and hats.
Skinaria
Skinaria is the best beach on Crete for snorkelers. Here, not far from Plakias, in crystal clear water, surrounded by steep cliffs, beautiful algae grow, hundreds of small fish live and even octopuses swim. The real attraction of the beach is its scuba diving center, which attracts divers from all over the world.
Skinaria occupies a small area covered with volcanic plates. There is free parking, an excellent Garden tavern, known for its affordable prices and delicious dishes from fresh products, a small number of sunbeds (2€/day) and umbrellas (1€). Entry into the sea is rocky, but safe. There are often waves at Skinaria, so if you are traveling with small children, you should choose another beach. Not far from the coast there are small lakes with fresh water from mountain springs – better place for scenic photos.
Shaitan Limani
This beach is for active tourists for whom climbing steep hills under the hot sun seems good adventure. At the foot of the mountain there is a piece of turquoise water - you can see the Aegean Sea, surrounded on all sides by stones.
This place is not intended for long swims, sunbathing or water activities - people come here for new impressions and inspiration. Don’t be surprised if you don’t find cafes or changing rooms here - the infrastructure in this place is absolutely undeveloped.
Shaitan Limani is one of the few beaches that can be reached by bus. Ticket price – from 3 euros, departs three times a day from the station Bus Station Chania. The beach is located 22 kilometers east of Chania and is part of the Akrotiri peninsula.
Important! Be sure to go to Shaitan Limani in comfortable shoes.
Flasarna
This is not just the best beach in Greek Crete, it is part of the beautiful ancient resort of the same name, located 50 km from Chania. Here on the long sandy coast, for several years now it has been displaying the European Blue Flag, awarded to it for its cleanliness. It is here that the joyful cries of little travelers are heard every day, and adult tourists admire the beautiful sunsets.
The beach is fully equipped for the convenience of vacationers, of whom there are many at any time of the year. There are sun loungers and umbrellas, toilets, changing rooms, a volleyball court, and a boat rental area. Nearby there are two cafes where you can taste the best dishes of Cretan cuisine.
Getting to Flasarna is quite easy - there is a bus service. If you go with a rented car, rest assured, as the road is straight and paved, with a small serpentine only at the end of the road.
Entry into the sea at Flasarn is very convenient - sandy and gently sloping. The depth increases gradually and over a long period of time, so it is very popular among families with children. The only drawback of the beach is the water temperature, since it is always several degrees colder here than in other parts of Crete.
Triopetra
This beautiful place with crystal clear water does not fall into the category of the best beaches in Crete for families with children, but is a clear favorite of snorkeling and diving lovers. In the deep transparent sea, surrounded by three steep cliffs, hundreds of small fish live, which swim close to the shore, since there are few tourists in this place.
Triopetra is fully customized to the needs of vacationers - there are umbrellas and sun loungers, showers, toilets, a large parking lot, several taverns and cafes. The road at the entrance to the beach is convenient (located in the town of Plakias), despite the winding, it is quite wide and safe. Sometimes there will be a strong wind that blows away small pebbles, but it usually stops within an hour.
Koutsounari
Ask a tourist who has visited Greece where the best beach and sea are in Crete to hear the treasured “Koutsounari”. Covered with small pebbles, with easy entry into the water and excellent infrastructure, it attracts hundreds of people every day.
Getting to Koutsounari, located 7 km from the resort of Yerapetra, is quite simple. There are regular departures from the city Shuttle Buses, and by car or taxi along a dirt road you can get straight to the water.
You won’t be able to get bored on the wide coastline: there are 3 hotels, many cafes and taverns, a diving club and a water entertainment center. It is very interesting to snorkel here, as the calm sea in this region is simply teeming with various aquatic inhabitants. Not far from the beach there is a campsite of the same name.

The beautiful Greek word refers to a complex of beaches located 5 km east of Paleochora. Here, on the wide and clean coast, every vacationer will find a place to their liking: pebbles or sand, a wild beach without amenities or sunbathing on comfortable sun loungers, peaceful enjoyment of the calm sea or jumping into the water from rocks.
You can get to Gialiskari by bus or car (the roads are narrow and winding, official parking is paid). The beach is surrounded by mountains and hills; in some places there are coniferous trees that provide natural shade. The water on Gialiskari is warm, the sunset is gentle, you can have a great rest here with small children. Entertainment: catamarans, boats, jet skis, snorkeling.
Karavostavi
A small beach and one of the best in Crete. High mountains, the purest beautiful water and a lot of greenery - such views are not dreamed of even in wonderful dreams.
The deep but warm sea discourages travelers with small children from Karavostavi. Entry into the water is convenient, the coast is covered with small pebbles. Near the beach there are high cliffs, from which they open panoramic views to the most beautiful places in Crete. Entertainment includes a tavern and a diving center (there is an underwater bridge and many interesting places for research). The beach has everything you need for comfortable rest facilities.
Note! Karavostavi is not suitable for budget tourists, since there is no place to lay out a towel or rug - you need to rent sunbeds and umbrellas for 7 euros per day.

Kokkini
Our list of the best beaches in Crete (Greece) ends with Kokkini, located in the village of Matala, in the south of the island. Its peculiarity is that the main visitors here are nudists, relaxing in the shade of trees and enjoying the warm sea waves.
To get to Kokkini, you need to cross the mountain, which is a significant obstacle for many tourists. But those who managed to cope with this obstacle receive a reward in view of the cleanest coastline, crystal clear water and amazing landscapes. There are caves that are interesting for snorkelers, high cliffs with the best panoramas of Crete for photographers, and red sand with beautiful stones around for those who just came to relax.
Important! Of all the infrastructure on Kokkini, only a small cafe with high prices, so take everything you need for your vacation from home.

Today we will talk about the best beaches of the Greek island of Crete, many of which can be called not only its decoration, but also the pride of the entire Mediterranean. Some of them are even included in the top twenty best beaches in the world.
Crete is the largest and most popular Greek island among tourists, the width of which varies from fourteen to thirty-seven kilometers, and the length is two hundred and fifty kilometers. Any traveler will find a resort and beach to his liking in Crete. It is worth remembering that in the southern part of the island there are mainly pebble beaches, there are high cliffs and stunning views. And the sandy beaches so beloved by travelers with children are located on the northern side of Crete. In addition to sandy and pebble beaches, shell beaches are common on the island of Crete. So, let's move on to the list of the best beaches on the island of Crete.
1. Elafonisi Beach– this amazing beach is located on a small island in the southwestern part of the island of Crete, seventy-five kilometers from the city of Chania. To get to this beach, you need to wade a hundred meters through shallow water. As you approach it, you will understand that the sand is not pink, but white, and this shade from a distance is obtained due to the numerous small pink shells on its surface. Due to the shallow depth, the water on this beach warms up well. Even in a storm you can safely swim here. That's why the beach is incredibly popular with families with children. Not far from the island there is a picturesque cedar forest, where you can take a walk if you are tired of the hot sun.
2. Balos Beach- a wild beach that can only be reached safely by swimming by water transport, but breathtakingly beautiful, and this attracts numerous tourists. Here White sand, the bottom gently sloping into the water, clean sea water, and complementing this idyll is the ancient fortress on the mountain towering above them. Previously, there was a pirate harbor here, which gave shelter to numerous ships flying the Jolly Roger flag. By the way, one of these ships sank near Balos, and divers can see it. The Cretan lagoon of Balos is a place where the waters of three seas meet: the Aegean, Ionian, Libyan, which causes a constant change in the color of the water throughout the day: the water changes shades of turquoise up to twenty times a day. Since this lagoon is quite closed, the sea on Balos Beach is always quiet and calm. As mentioned above, you can get to this beach by boat sailing with excursions from the port of Quisamoss; along the way, it will take you to admire the beautiful Venetian fortress on the island of Gramvousa.
3. Matala Beach– located on south coast island of Crete, in the village of the same name. It is popular for its very beautiful nature, its main attraction is a powerful rock with a layered structure, mysterious caves, and picturesque natural balconies. For many years, Matala Beach has received the “Blue Flag of Europe” - a symbol of clean water. There is a fairly developed infrastructure: there are sun loungers, umbrellas, a rescue point, showers, toilets, and a cafe. There are many small but very cozy nearby family hotels. Right along the shore of this fishing village there are numerous taverns, cafes and bars where you can taste national Greek food. Matala Beach is always quiet and windless due to the rocks surrounding it, but the water, due to the fact that it is located in the southern part of the island of Crete, is a little colder.
4. Vai Beach- very popular among holidaymakers on the island of Crete because of the magnificent date grove growing right on the seashore. By the way, this is the largest palm forest in Europe, covering an area of two hundred and fifty hectares. The beach is located thirty kilometers east of the city of Sitia. It is equipped with everything necessary for relaxation, but there are no hotels nearby, so if you plan to stay here to relax for several days, take a tent with you or look for a hotel in the village of Palekastro, located ten kilometers from Vai beach; you will not find closer accommodation. Vai Beach has the “Blue Flag of the European Union” for its cleanliness and well-groomed area. It is considered the most beautiful beach on the island of Crete. And the sea water here is so clean that you can see numerous colorful fish in it tens of meters away.
5. Malia Beach– wild, sandy beach - perfect place For family vacation, located on the northern coast of Crete, next to the resort town of the same name. Not far from the beach there are the majestic ruins of a Minoan palace, which archaeologists are excavating to this day. The beach is popular not only among families with children, but also among young people, due to its proximity to the city of Hersonissos, famous for its nightclubs. 6. Elounda Beach– located in a picturesque sea bay Mirabello, near the town of Agios Nikolaos, is the pride and decoration of the island of Crete, as well as one of the best beaches in Greece, where far from the poor people of the world come to relax. There is fine white sand, a warm and clean sea that remains calm even in the wind, many luxury hotels and villas, and elite restaurants serving amazing local Greek cuisine.
7. Platanias Beach– is located on the northern coast of the island of Crete, next to the village of the same name. It stretches for four kilometers, being a popular place for water activities: banana boat rides, scooter rides, parasailing and so on. For its cleanliness it annually receives the “European Blue Flag”. Vacationers on this beach can take a boat trip to the island of St. Fedor located opposite. The village of Platanias is adjacent to the famous orange groves of Crete. But the village itself is not boring, as there are many discos, bars, cafes, entertainment centers, shops. And you can stay in one of the many hotels, for every taste and budget.
8. Rethymnon Beach- the longest sixteen-kilometer sandy beach on the island of Crete, located in the city of the same name. Along the beach there are hotels of different star ratings, cafes and taverns, shops, and disco bars. Despite the fact that the water here is not as clean and transparent as on other beaches of Crete, as the proximity affects large city, there are always a lot of tourists. Some people don’t want to leave all the benefits of the metropolis, so they stay in Rethymno. But there are a lot of interesting things here historical places that you can visit if you are tired of passive relaxation near the water: the beautiful Venetian fortress of Forteza, the authentic old port, the Arcadia monastery, the Rimondi fountain, the seventeenth century, many interesting museums and ancient monuments.
9. Georgioupoli Beach– an excellent place in Crete for a family holiday with children, located equidistant from the resorts of Chania and Rethymnon. There is a smooth entry into the sea, many meters of shallow water, so letting children go into the water alone is not scary. Opposite this beach, on a small island in the middle of the sea, there is a small church. The Greeks themselves love to visit Georgioupoli Beach.
10. Agia Marina Beach– the most popular sandy beach on the island of Crete in the resort of the same name, located eight kilometers from the resort of Chania. Here you will find the purest golden sand, clear sea, with a smooth entrance and gradually increasing depth, and developed infrastructure. Along the beach there are endless taverns, nightclubs, hotels, and restaurants. Every year this beach receives the “Blue Flag of Europe” for the ideal cleanliness of the water and coastline. Holidays with children here are ideal: parents can calmly watch their offspring building sand castles on the shore, collecting shells that are thrown out by the oncoming wave or splashing in the shallow water. Outside the beach, children can enjoy riding on small trains. Adults will enjoy karting, mini golf, interesting excursions. From the beach of Agia Marina, as well as from Platanias beach, you can see the island of St. Fedor, which can be reached by boat. If you wish, you can walk around orange groves, located just south of the village.
The island of Crete is not limited to just the beaches we have listed, there are a lot of them here and for every taste, we only talked about the most popular among tourists. But we invite you to find your dream beach on the island of Crete on your own.

The uniqueness of this place is in its water. It has a unique color - aquamarine, turning into turquoise and gradually becoming azure. The thing is that Balos Bay is located I'm at the junction of three seas: Aegean, Adriatic and Libyan. Their waters mix and form such an unusual color.
However, getting to the lagoon is quite difficult. Tourists usually use water transport, but you can also get there by car along a dirt road.
There is a legend that Balos is a former pirate haven. There's even a sunken ship here and old fortress, which especially pleases diving enthusiasts.
Unfortunately, Balos is not equipped with sun loungers, changing rooms and toilets. But lovers of pure nature are not deterred by such inconveniences.

Therefore, when going here for the whole day, you should take into account the return travel time.

- – a small paradise that is difficult to reach
Marble Rocks northeast of Chania form a small narrow bay . Stone guards protect this beach from bad weather, mainly from winds, and thereby prevent wave formation. Here you can calmly swim, soak up the sun and admire the untouched nature.
But getting to the beach is not easy for Stefan. This is only possible if you have a boat.
The water in the bay is bright turquoise, and the beach itself is fine-pebble with sand, washed up from a neighboring quarry. Like all wild beaches, Stefanou is not equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas and changing rooms.
- – neighbor of ancient Greek myths
Not far from it there is a monument - the labyrinth of the minotaur. In addition, it was here that the god Zeus was born. And then Theseus put an end to the mythical monster.
Malia is one of the few wild beaches, which can be recommended to families with small children and older people, because this coast has a temperate climate and it never gets hot here.
- located next to the village of the same name
It is known for its purity, for which it was awarded the Blue Flag of Europe.
There are many small cozy hotels here that welcome tourists. A unusual landscape with sea cliff wins the hearts of many, many people.
- Crete has not only sea beaches, but also fresh ones, for example - on Lake Kournas
The lake is located in the Rethymnon region, which can be reached by bus. This beach is inferior in scale to sea beaches, but If you can't stand salt water, then this is the perfect solution for you.
It is impossible to single out just one beach on Crete from all the diversity - they are all beautiful!

The best beaches of Crete on the map
If you want solitude, then you need to go to Balos in the morning or vice versa, in the late afternoon. Well, if you got to Crete in the first half of May, then you don’t have to worry, because... The boats are not sailing yet, and quite a few tourists come by car.
What's good about this beach? Firstly, the water is simply amazing in the number of shades. Very beautiful views. Fine sand, pink in places, perfectly clear water and quite shallow.
There are sun loungers and umbrellas even on such a remote beach. There is also a toilet, but there are no shops on the beach itself, so you need to take snacks, water, and sunscreen with you.
Located in the southwestern part of the island. It's easy to get there by car, following the signs, straight to the beach.
In the middle of the day and high season there are a lot of people on the beach.
We got to the beach at sunset, and there was no one else here except us.
Here, just like on Balos, pink sand, crystal pure water, and shallow water.
The Elafonisi Islands can be reached by wading.
Located in the south of the island, next to the Francokastello fortress. Quite quiet and cozy beach. Nearby there are shops and taverns, toilets and showers, sun loungers and umbrellas.
Fine white sand, clear water. There is also a smooth entry into the water. Children will definitely love it here.
This is a rather secluded corner, located at the end of the Agiofarango gorge.
The beach is wild and pebble. Such a small bay surrounded by rocks. It is impossible to get to the beach by car. The car will have to be left in the parking lot, and walk along the gorge about 2 km. But the gorge is wide, the path is surrounded by tall rocks, and the path itself is straight, easy, I think even a child can handle it. There is a church in the gorge. The water in the bay is clean and turquoise.
There are not many people on the beach (we counted about 10 people in total). But, however, because of such seclusion of the beach, nudists chose it, so that half of the vacationers on the beach sunbathed naked. If this bothers you, then it’s better not to waste time on Agiofarango.
It is located in the northeast of the island, just east of Agios Nikolaos, in the village of Istro. It is very easy to get here: you can either by car or by bus.
The beach is organized, there are sun loungers with umbrellas, toilets, changing rooms, showers, a cafe, and a large parking lot. The beach has fine “golden” sand. The beach strip is quite narrow, but stretches for a long distance along the coast. The entrance to the water is gentle. Of course, the water is perfectly clear. The bottom is sandy and flat. Paradise for kids. In windy weather you can ride good waves.
During the day there are certainly a lot of people on the beach. But we got to the beach around 5 pm, we were practically alone, except for a couple of people.
The beach is awarded annually " blue flag"and is included in the prestigious list of beaches of the Costa Nostrum organization. In our opinion, this is the best beach in Crete, and it is also easily accessible.
Ierapetra Beach
Quite a long city beach, equipped with everything you need. The water is clean, like everywhere else in Crete.
The beach itself is sandy, but the sand is gray and there are pebbles. At the entrance to the sea there are stone slabs, so it will probably be more comfortable to enter the special one. shoes
There are tamarisk trees on the beach, and if you don't want to pay for an umbrella, you can hide in their shade.
Located on the northeastern tip of the island of Crete. But this beach disappointed me. It takes a long time to get there, parking is paid. If you leave the car along the road, then it’s a decent walk to the beach, and there aren’t many places where you can squeeze the car in, and everything else is fenced off. There are many cafes, dears. Showers and toilets are paid, sunbeds and umbrellas are also available for a fee. There is a palm grove, for which everyone comes here.
There are too many tourists (not visible in the photo, because it’s daytime and they are all hiding in the shade of trees and cafes). We didn't go swimming. But we climbed the mountain to the right of the bay. There are quite a decent staircase leading up, from here, from above, there is a beautiful view of the entire bay (in the top photo).
For those who finally came here and are in no hurry, you can go to the nearby secluded beach (pictured below). You can get to it by climbing the stairs from Vai beach, and going through the top of the mountain along the path and going down.
But apart from a beautiful panorama, there is nothing special about this beach. Is it worth traveling so far when there are many more interesting beaches much closer?
For us, the most comfortable, affordable and coolest were Vulisma And . These beaches are suitable for all categories of tourists: young people, older people and families with children.
Balos is very beautiful, but due to its inaccessibility it is difficult to visit there more than once. But it's worth seeing at least once.
