Shuya
The Shuya River is very popular among lovers extreme sports. It is located in the south of Karelia in the basin of Lake Onega. Its length reaches 10.1 thousand kilometers.
The reservoir flows through the territories of the Prionezhsky, Pryazhinsky and Suoyarvsky regions of the Republic of Karelia.
This river is just as beautiful as it is capricious. Shuya has areas with different nature and different depths. Narrow and rocky places are replaced by high water zones and vice versa.
Thresholds are present throughout the entire area of the river. But they are safe. Rafting on it was assigned the second category of complexity.
It is believed that Shuya is also loved for the fact that it is easy to get to her. It flows near Petrozavodsk. And this city is a large administrative center, it has a railway station and an airport.
Suna
The Suna is a short river flowing into Lake Onega. Its length reaches 280 kilometers. Along the course of this reservoir, there are also lakes.
The banks of the Suna are rocky and low. In places there are swampy areas. But there are also sandy beaches.
The Suna River is famous for its famous waterfall. It is called Kivach. It is considered the second highest waterfall in Europe. To see it, people specially come to Karelia.

Ohta
The locals also call this river Nizhnyaya Okhta and Ovtuya. It is located in the north of the Republic of Karelia and is a right tributary of the Kem. The length of this mountain river reaches 142 kilometers.
It flows past Spirit Island. It houses a unique museum of funny wooden figures. This establishment is under open sky. Also, tourists can visit the surroundings of the monastery, located on the island of Trinity.
Ural
Ural is the third most popular place for rafting. It attracts young athletes very much, because the local rivers are ideal for the first rafting.
As a rule, the difficulty of rafting in the Ural reservoirs does not exceed three points.
It will be interesting here not only for lovers of traveling along mountain rivers, but also for tourists who love to survey local sights.
It is worth noting that the rivers of the Urals are very calm in summer, so beginners are recommended to raft along them. Experienced rafting enthusiasts will be more interested in conquering the Ural reservoirs in the spring, during the flood period.
White
The Belaya River is the largest tributary of the Kama. White flows through Southern Urals and the Urals.
The length of Belaya reaches 1.43 thousand kilometers.
They start rafting down the Belaya River in May and finish in October.
Belaya flows past the Granite Canyon, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Republic of Adygea. Also, those who like to tickle their nerves will be able to walk along the longest suspension bridge in the area.
Those who have been involved in rafting for a long time are advised to choose the upper Belaya for rafting. There are a lot of reverse shafts, clamps and shivers. Most of the descent will be carried out in terrain along the coast of which it is impossible to drive a car. The last automobile trail breaks off at the "Goose Ford" - one of the amusing parts of the route along the Belaya.
Rafting competitions are often held here.
Chusovaya
The Chusovaya, like the Belaya, is a left, but not so large, tributary of the Kama. It flows through the territories Perm Territory, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions.
Its length reaches 735 kilometers.
Where the river passes through the mountain ranges, its banks abound with both beautiful and terrifying rocks, which are popularly called stones.
This river is considered relatively calm. But this calm leaves room for contemplation in a person's attention. After all, its shores are famous for their extraordinary beauty.
Caucasus
In addition to the Belaya River, which is also in the Republic of Adygea, the Caucasus has another body of water that is great for rafting. We are talking about the river Mzymta.
Mzymta
The length of this river reaches only 89 kilometers. But, despite its small size, in some places it shows a wayward, one might say, violent character. But in other parts of Mzymta is calm and happily rides rafting beginners through its waters.
It originates from the lakes Kardyvach and Maly Kardyvach. Traveling along this river, you can see the so-called emerald waterfalls.
Also in the Mzymta basin there are several mineral springs, the presence of which will please people who care about health.
This river is one of the few mountain reservoirs, where it is pleasant to relax with the whole family. Both adults and children feel great in the Ah-Tsu gorge. Surprisingly, in the same gorge there is a waterfall, which has the sixth level of difficulty in passing. It can be overcome only by professionals with rich alloy experience.
Yakutia
Traveling around Yakutia is very popular among lovers of untouched nature. Here is a very picturesque flora and diverse fauna, not spoiled by human intervention.
Timpton
This Yakut river is the right tributary of the Aldan. Its length reaches 644 kilometers. Its course passes through the Aldan Highlands.
Rafting on this river is assigned the fourth level of difficulty.
Chulman
It is a left tributary of the Timpton. Great not only for rafting, but also for fishing.
Its length reaches 109 kilometers.
Rafting on Chulman is assigned the third level of difficulty, which means that even beginners will be able to “saddle” this river.
Other
Also, speaking of the best places for rafting in Russia, one cannot fail to mention Kola Peninsula. There is the famous river Umba. Its lower reaches are excellent for rafting. The river has rapids of the third and fourth difficulty levels. This fact, coupled with the small length of the reservoir, makes traveling around Umba very exciting.
It is also worth mentioning the mountain rivers of Eastern Siberia. Rafting enthusiasts often visit Iya, Snowy, Great White River, Khara-Murin and Kita. However, these reservoirs are suitable only for those rafters who are confident in their abilities.
For beginners, it is better to give preference to the Irkut River. Its passage is not considered difficult or dangerous.
Conclusion
There are many mountain rivers in Russia that can please lovers of rafting. Each person is able to choose the route that he masters.
Most importantly, when choosing a place for rafting, take into account the level of your sports training and do not take unnecessary risks.
Unlike its Indian and other ancestors, the modern raft (translated from English means "raft") looks more like a large inflatable boat or even a synthetic mattress. And it is able to overcome long distances and rather dangerous obstacles without loss. From four to two dozen people can sail on it with a sufficient degree of comfort and safety, even on the most turbulent river.According to the number of layers, rafts are divided into one- and two-layer. The advantage of the first, lighter and more compact, is the ease of preparation for rafting. The main advantage of the latter is considered to be greater reliability and stability on the water.
ancient rafting
Modern rafting is not too similar to a classic wooden raft, but rafting itself has been known to mankind since time immemorial. And the same dashing "German" Indians, who boldly fought against the white conquerors in the movies, were probably not the pioneers of the rafting, but adopted the science of managing their boats on a by no means smooth and quiet river from the former inhabitants of local reservoirs.
Similar assumptions are confirmed by the excavations of archaeologists. In their opinion, canoes, which look great even on the most terrible river rapids, have long been known to people and were used precisely to overcome natural water barriers. Rafting was used for alloying not only warriors, as well as expeditions of gold prospectors and hunters, but also for moving bulky items for industrial purposes. For example, wood.
By the way, sometimes something unimaginable is also called rafting. If only something resembling a raft could move on the water and be able to pass at least some obstacle without loss.
Sports rafting
As people mastered the rivers and various ways to overcome them, rafting, along with rowing slalom, began to turn into a truly extreme water sport. It is able to throw a real sea of adrenaline and energy into the blood of participants.
In sports documents, such movement of people in helmets and life jackets on rafts, or rather rafts, is called the scientific phrase: "Team rafting on mountain rivers for a while with the obligatory overcoming of natural and artificial water obstacles." The crew of such a raft is, in fact, a professional team. And his captain also performs the functions of a coach, responsible not only for the result, but also for the safety of teammates and the raft.
Sports rafting competitions consist of four separate events: sprint (or qualifying), for which a team can receive up to 100 points; parallel sprint (200 points); slalom (300); and finally the so-called long race (400). The winner of the tournament is the team with the most points.
Tourist rafting
Inflatable and convenient both for transportation and for carrying, the synthetic "raft-boat-mattress" is very popular among extreme tourists who love risk and excitement. He is especially in demand in early spring, during the descent from the mountains of snow avalanches and stormy or so-called white water rushing along the riverbeds with abundant foam and fountains of ice spray.
The main obstacles for rafts are individual stones, dangerous rapids (areas with a large drop in water level) and no less dangerous and overturning barrels (areas with a reverse flow that occurs at the place where the water falls). The rapids that rafters cross fall into six categories. Amateurs and novice athletes usually compete on the rapids of the third or fourth categories. Professionals - fifth or sixth.
The maximum task for many tourists, especially beginners, is a kind of swimming in the icy water of a stream that is wild in terms of the degree of chaos. But for more experienced rafters, the same task is different - to defeat this terrible stream, cope with it, subjugate the "white water" and survive ...
IN Lately Many new words and concepts have entered our everyday life. This also includes the word. This word comes from the English word "raft", which means a raft in Russian.
At present, a modern raft has very little in common with a traditional wooden raft. In the modern sense, a raft is an inflatable boat of a special design, made of modern materials, and which can accommodate from four to twenty people. The most widespread boats with a capacity of up to ten people. A distinctive feature of the modern raft is its high stability on the water, we can say that this is a kind of all-terrain vehicle-universal for traveling through the expanses of water.
The range of use of the raft is quite wide - from a one-day family walk on calm water, and ending with its use in multi-day expeditions on stormy rivers, as well as in rescue operations. But rafting gained the greatest popularity on the so-called "white water" - rafting down a turbulent river with the passage of its various obstacles and rapids.
It is quite clear that rafting on mountain rivers is an extreme activity that carries a certain amount of risk to the health and life of its participants. The opinion that inexperienced beginners can raft on their own is deeply erroneous. Such an activity can be considered relatively safe and exciting only if the necessary safety standards are observed, an experienced guide is available, and the complexity of the river section corresponds to the group’s level of training. If we compare the passage of a mountain river in a kayak, catamaran or kayak, which require participants to high level training, rafting can be considered a fairly simple and more affordable way to conquer the water element. But the most important thing is that rafting does not lose its appeal for lovers of extreme sports and thrills. Thanks to this, this way of overcoming mountain rivers has become widely popular among non-professionals, and has become quite often in demand in the areas of recreation and entertainment. Because a lot of travel agencies and companies in different countries, offer their customers this type extreme recreation.
It should be noted that rafting is primarily a team sport, where each participant performs certain functions, and an experienced instructor leads the crew. When rafting glory, three main methods of rowing are used:
1. Swing oars mounted on a special frame.
2. Canoe way.
3. A combined method in which canoeists help rowers with swing oars.
In sports rafting, the canoe method is mainly used. Here, rowers with oars are positioned evenly along the sides of the raft, sitting on gondolas, fixing their legs on the bottom of the boat with special loops. Rowers sitting on the back of the raft act as helmsmen. As a rule, one of the helmsmen, and he is the most experienced participant, gives commands to all participants in the rafting. Guided by these instructions, the crew members keep the raft in the required direction by the synchronous operation of the oars. When descending a raft down a turbulent river, it is thrown like a piece of wood, and only thanks to the coordinated actions of the entire crew, it is possible to maintain the desired position and successfully complete the rafting.
Taking into account the conditions under which the rafting takes place, it is mandatory for the crew to use special protective equipment. As a rule, rafting takes place in rough and fast currents, so all crew members must have such special protection items as a protective helmet and life jacket. In addition, the equipment should include thermal insulating clothing, special shoes, since mountain streams carry rather cold water with them.
In order to understand what rafting is, you need to imagine a turbulent river in front of your eyes, carrying its waters along its banks at breakneck speed, feel a thirst for adventure and a desire to get joy from overcoming obstacles that arise in the path of the river. It may seem that it is available only to trained professionals and there is no place for a beginner in it - but this is not entirely true. Everyone can get an adrenaline rush under the guidance of an experienced instructor. But to start, it is worth knowing what rafting is.
A bit of history
The concept of "rafting" comes from the word raft ("raft" in English) and means at the same time a kind of active rest and an extreme sport in which participants raft in small boats of natural and artificial water channels. In rafting, official championships and competitions are held, World and European cups are awarded, there is even a Rafting Federation.
There is a legend about how rafting appeared. It says that rafts first appeared during the Vietnam War and were used to transport vital cargo along the arteries of the rivers. And one day such a raft broke away from the leash and went along with the man into the rapids. The soldier who survived this episode did not at all become afraid of the rivers, but received a wave of adrenaline and pleasure because he survived such an ordeal. And this fun spread very quickly, because the soldier's life does not shine with entertainment. And here everything is at hand - water, rapids, brothers-in-arms, ready to fight the elements together. Since then, as the story goes, this entertainment has existed, which, without thinking twice, was dubbed rafting.
Also, rafts were used in World War II by American special forces during the landing in Normandy in 1944. Alas, then the attempt to land on the coast was unsuccessful.
The first rafting competition was held in 1989
About rafting
Whatever rafting was at the time of its inception, now it is both a commercial entertainment available to everyone and a serious, sometimes dangerous sport.
The watercraft itself, although it is called a raft, is very different from it. The raft has the appearance of a voluminous inflatable boat made of modern synthetic materials that are durable and strong. The body of the raft consists of independent compartments that form the outer frame, and the inner one is made up of inflatable transverse tanks that form stiffeners (many confuse them with seats). The design has proven its reliability in rafting on high mountain rivers - the steepest and most dangerous routes for this sport. It is also distinguished from ordinary boats by the presence of a self-draining drainage system, which helps to immediately get rid of excess water in it. Hence the strict measures to avoid overloading the raft - in this case, the system may work inefficiently and this threatens with an accident.
Another feature that distinguishes the raft from other water vehicles is single or paired foot rests for the legs at the bottom of the raft. They qualitatively fix the feet of the rafting participants, keeping them on steep rapids and helping to row. Also, a special coating that prevents the legs from slipping helps not to fall overboard. It is not available on all rafts, but if it is equipped with it, then the grip with the balloon will be excellent.
In case the rower still fell overboard, a rope is provided that encircles the perimeter of the boat. It is fastened with steel rings and is an integral part of the modern raft.
The number of people participating in the swim varies from 4 to 16 - depending on the design of the raft. Their dimensions vary in width from 1.8 to 2.5 meters, and in length from 3.5 to 6 meters, and the type corresponds to the difficulty of the route, the height of the rapids and the full flow of the river. The smaller the raft, the more maneuverable it is and the narrower and more difficult the river is to pass on it. Medium and large rafts are used on relatively light alloys on large full-flowing rivers.
It is impossible to single out clear types of rafting, but one can single out a clear purpose of the alloys themselves. There is such a classification:
- Hiking rafting. Tourist commercial rafting, which can specifically include even simple walks on calm waters. But for lovers of adrenaline, they can include sections with rapids and obstacles.
- Sports rafting. A sport in which competitors complete tasks and are awarded points based on their performance.
- Expedition rafting. A scientific trip of a group of people with special training.
Rafting is also used in rescue operations.
Types of rowing and tours
Types of rowing in rafting are divided into 3 main types. The first - with the help of conventional swing oars, which are mounted on a special frame. The rowing method is also used, as for a canoe, in which the rowers are evenly spaced along the perimeter of the sides. They sit on gondolas, and their legs are fixed in special loops at the bottom of the raft. The most experienced participants are at the back, acting as helmsmen, and give commands to the rest. Sometimes this is done by one person who is the commander of the group. There is also a combined method, when canoeists help rowers on swing oars.
But whatever method is chosen, the main thing is the coordinated action of the whole team, synchronous work to keep the raft in the right position and strict subordination, which will help to successfully complete the rafting.
In total, there are six levels (categories) of complexity of rafting tours, from the simplest to the most difficult, respectively. Up to the third level, tours involve the participation of people who do not have special training, they sit on the sides of the raft, following the commands of the instructor. In some cases, rowers are inside the raft, right on the stiffeners, which also perform well as ottomans. Starting from the fourth level, the requirements for admission to the passage become tougher, and only experienced professionals can pass the sixth level. Personal safety is ensured by protective equipment: helmets, life jackets. If the rafting is carried out in cold water, then neoprene shoes and wetsuits are added to them.
The popularity of a particular route is influenced by many factors, among which the main ones are:
- Since the whole essence of rafting is in passing obstacles, the number of interesting sections and the degree of difficulty come first.
- The presence of attractions (water and historical), which can be seen when overcoming the route.
- Location and opportunities to get to the starting point. After all, some tours can take place in the most remote places on the planet, which not everyone can reach.
But even on the simplest route, rafting on the river does not cease to be an extreme activity. And it carries both a fair dose of adrenaline and impressions, and a certain amount of risk. There is an opinion that complete beginners can do this, without the advice and guidance of an experienced guide - it is fundamentally wrong. It is exciting and safe (on the contrary - relatively safe) only if you follow the safety rules, have an experienced escort and the appropriate preparation of the river section. Of course, compared to rowing or kayaking, which requires long training, rafting seems like a relatively easy and gentle way to conquer the river. But this does not interfere with its popularity, as extreme lovers among non-professionals appreciated it.
In this sport, with direct rafting, there are only 6 teams, due to which the raft moves with the flow:
- Move - the team is making every effort to move the raft forward.
- Slow move - participants row at half strength.
- Taban - back.
- A hook is a stroke that shifts the boat parallel to its current position (carried out perpendicular to the raft axis).
- Break - a stroke that displaces the raft and is opposite to the hook.
- Sushi - paddles are placed on your knees (rest).
And finally
Rowing in rafting is not an end in itself. This is an opportunity to get those unforgettable sensations and vivid impressions that are not available in everyday life. Where else can you feel the crazy adrenaline rush from the fight against the ruthless elements on steep sections of the path and the peace and tranquility that follows it on still water? Having decided to do it, you will be able to experience all the delights (however, as well as hardships) of the life of a tourist: you will find yourself in the bosom of nature untouched by man, sing songs with a guitar by the night fire, communicate with interesting and unusual people, fill your memory with memories, and the album - photographs. Or it may turn out that the Rafting Federation is waiting for you, if you get carried away seriously.
Many have recently been interested in: rafting - what is it? In a general sense, rafting is rafting on turbulent rivers with rapids on large frameless inflatable boats. Rafts are quite reliable and stable, have great buoyancy, so you don’t have to worry about your safety. One of the most important advantages of such a holiday is the capacity of the raft (from 6 to 12 people), and this allows you to go on extreme sailing with a large company.
Rafting in detail
Let's figure it out: rafting - what is it, swimming exclusively on rivers? In fact, this is a broad concept and means all kinds of extreme recreation on rivers, rapids and waterfalls. This is not just a risk, but a spirit of competition and overcoming. And also a separation in the full sense of the word - from the earth, civilization and the usual way of life.
Rafting is an original way to get acquainted with the water element. Often, rafting refers to any activity on the water where rafts are used. Since water tourism involves a certain risk, it was exclusively the privilege of professionals. But it was so until the raft was invented - a vessel that can be used for rafting on water bodies of any complexity.
Russian Rafting Federation
In Russia, rafting has been recognized as an official sport since 2003. The Rafting Federation of the Russian Federation is a non-profit organization and has been operating since 2001. This organization received accreditation in 2003. Competitions in this sport are included in international, all-Russian and interregional sporting events. The Russian Rafting Federation is also a member of the International Rafting Federation. Judges in this sport must meet certain qualification requirements.
Rafting preparation
Each of the participants in the rafting must first of all think about their safety. Vessels must be of high quality, and equipment must be reliable. The design of the raft should provide extreme sports enthusiasts with additional insurance against falling overboard (inflatable crossbars that fix the legs). Participants in the swim also wear a helmet and in addition, sometimes additional equipment will be useful. For example, if the water in the river is icy, then you should think about a wetsuit, you can also pick up comfortable shoes - boots with ribbed rubber soles. Rafting tours can only be done by those who can swim, because even if you are wearing a life jacket, it will not be able to deliver a person to the shore on its own.
At the same time, the most reliable rescuer is the raft itself, and if you suddenly find yourself overboard in a stormy river, it is better to go through all the obstacles holding tightly to the raft than to get to the shore by self-rafting.
How to take part in the rafting tour?
To participate in rafting, the participant must assess the difficulty of the route. It, in particular, depends on the obstacles to be overcome. Obstacles will be stones in the river bed, rapids (areas with a difference in water level), as well as other irregularities in the water flow (swells, plums, barrels). It is worth noting that barrels cause great difficulties - areas with a reverse flow, which occurs at the place where water masses fall from the drain. They can obstruct the movement of the vessel and carry it back into the water stream, where it is possible to roll over. There is a world classification of the complexity of obstacles in sections of water bodies. In total there are 6 categories of difficulty. Therefore, the higher the difficulty number, the more dangerous and risky the route.
Reviews
Every year more and more people want to feel the fullness of emotions that rafting can give. Reviews about this activity are only positive. Moreover, many fans of this sport note that it is worth trying at least once to ride like this - and then it is impossible to stop. Even many lovers of passive recreation note that after they swam on a raft on a mountain river, they did not regret at all that they risked doing something unusual for themselves.
How is the swim going?
For people who do not have special training, no higher than the 3rd category is permissible. For those who want to fully experience adrenaline in large doses, special expeditions are offered. However, only those tourists who have already descended the steep rapids more than once dare to take such a risk.
During the trip, people sit on the sides of the raft and, under the guidance of an instructor, row with oars. The guide will give simple commands about the direction of the paddles. On difficult routes, the instructors of the unit are athletes. Rafting is not only rowing, but also stops in beautiful places with cooking on a fire, overnight stays, songs with a guitar.
Travel geography
Now that we have dealt with all the details, we hope you will no longer wonder: rafting - what is it? Therefore, let's move on to an overview of the most popular routes. The most famous rafting centers are Karelia, the Caucasus and Altai. However, there are other equally interesting routes: Siberia, Yakutia, Far East, Ural. As part of such tours, you can not only go rowing, but also get acquainted with amazing beauties reserved and wild regions of Russia.
Karelia
Our country has many unique water routes where you can travel from spring to autumn. A large number of rafting tours are organized in Karelia. For rafting there is plenty to choose from. The most popular rivers are Suna, Shuya, Okhta, Chirka-Kem and others. On Shuya, even children can participate in the rafting. This river flows through densely populated areas on steep high banks covered with pine forests. There are also many beaches and, of course, rapids of the second degree of difficulty. Those who want to get a particularly thrilling experience can take a trip along the difficult rapids of the Okhta River. Rafting in Karelia is a great variety of route options. The Psta River, which flows through the northern part of the republic and flows into
A characteristic property of the rivers of Karelia is the alternation of lake areas with river ones. One of the most exciting is the Janisjoki-Valaam-Ladoga Skerries tour, which is designed for a week. It includes a trip through the rocky bays among the Ladoga Islands, rafting on the Janisjoki River and a tour of the estate, which is located in a fabulous beautiful place. Rafting in Karelia is an unforgettable experience along routes of varying difficulty.
Murmansk
Enough interesting route for lovers of rafting is the river Umbozera (Murmansk region). Throughout its length there are rapids, reaches, lakes (there are places up to the 4th category of complexity). The best place for rafting on this river - July-August. Such a vacation will appeal to those who love active, but secluded recreation, fishing, northern berries and mushrooms.
Caucasus
In the Caucasus, Mzymta also attracts the attention of tourists. By the way, it is on them, as well as on the mountain rivers of Altai, that the rafting federation holds the stages of the Russian Rafting Championship. The source of the Mzymta is in the mountains, then it flows through a narrow valley and flows into the Black Sea near Adler. Rafting from the Ah-Tsu gorge is in demand among mothers with children, because here rafting takes place almost on calm water. But there are also more difficult routes: from the Krasnopolyanskaya hydroelectric power station to the Akh-tsu gorge. In some areas, the raft even begins to jump along the huge shafts, overcoming the stormy water abyss.
The path along the Belaya River is one of the most extreme. Here, in a small area, a number of rapids are concentrated: Teatralny, Toporiki, Kishi-1, Kishi-2 and Topory. The last three are considered the fifth category of difficulty. The Ax threshold is generally insurmountable, so the participants carry the rafts along the shore, and the Kishi-2 threshold is passed with the help of additional insurance. Only for the most daring and courageous such an excursion is suitable. Rafting is really a test not only of the body, but also of the spirit.
Altai
In Altai, most of the rivers have a mountainous stormy character. In the region, rafting is most common along the Katun and its tributary Chuya. Chuuya is mountain river with rather complex thresholds. Katun is a large and wide body of water with mighty ramparts; it originates on the slope of the high mountain Siberia - Beluga whales. You can also sequentially go through both reservoirs. Rafting on the Chuya River is considered much more difficult: during the rafting, tourists overcome thresholds from the third to the fifth category of difficulty. In order to successfully pass them, you will need well-coordinated teamwork, composure and endurance. The Horizon threshold is especially striking, here the Chuya River seethes and rumbles between two narrow rocky cliffs, and then turns sharply by as much as 90 degrees. But the thresholds do not end there. Only in the lower reaches of the Katun you can relax, there is no particular danger here, even children are allowed to take this route.
You'll like it!
So, rafting - what is it? This is an exciting adventure, and the release of emotions, and victory over yourself and the water element. At the same time, remember that there are clear rules that must be followed. Only if rafting is a safe recreation, it can bring a lot of pleasure.
