From the history
Crimea was a crossroads of many roads connecting different states, tribes and peoples. All of them left traces of their stay on its territory and wrote many bright pages into the centuries-old history of the peninsula, sometimes tragic and bloody, sometimes legendary, heroic and creative. There are monuments from different eras, a mixture of cultures, customs and traditions. Everything here is rich in history; it is a living book about the diversity of the world.
Man has been exploring Crimea for a long time. People lived here 100 and 150 thousand years ago. But the first people about whom written evidence has been preserved were the Cimmerians. Mentions of them are found already in the 8th century. BC e. Homer wrote about the Cimmerians in the Odyssey and the Iliad, and later the historian Herodotus dedicated one of the fragments of his multi-volume history to them.
There is little evidence about the Cimmerians, they are a mysterious people, but it is known that they were nomadic pastoralists. The Cimmerians were replaced by the Tauri, a warlike mountain people who, as Herodotus wrote, lived in robbery and war. Later, the Tauri disappeared without a trace into the world of the Scythians, nomads who supposedly came from Asia.
The Scythians, who took possession of the entire steppe Crimea, gradually switched to sedentary life; Scythian Naples became their capital, the remains of which can be seen in modern Simferopol.
The Sarmatians lived next to the Scythians. These peoples were closely related to each other. The Greeks brought their culture, which had a great influence on the peoples living on the peninsula, to Crimea. These were immigrants from the outskirts Ancient Greece, from the lands that are now the western and northern ends of Turkey and the nearby islands of the Aegean Sea. Having settled in Crimea, the Greek colonists founded two states: one on the western (Chersonese on the territory of modern Sevastopol), the other on the eastern (Bosporan Kingdom on the shores of the Kerch Strait) ends of the peninsula.
The first Greek colonists appeared on the coast of the Northern Black Sea region 2600-2700 years ago. They sent grain, fish, and salt to mainland Greece.
